***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I looked up Schwarber's stats over the weekend. Has a .190 avg, 175 Ks (will probably get to 200, as he did last year), 40 HRs, bats leadoff for a potential playoff team.

Not trying to be a smartass, but what does "basic baseball IQ" say about that? I really don't understand it, but the game has changed.
Good question with a fairly straightforward answer, and I’d argue Happ should be getting a similar treatment.

Schwarbers batting average is terrible but his OBP is third best on the team at .342. The two guys above him in OBP (Harper and Marsh) are hitting above .290.

So the question is do you want Schwarber on base and trust Harper to hit him in, or do you want Harper on base and trust Schwarber to hit him in? Schwarber will more than likely walk before hitting Harper in.

Ross takes the opposite approach - Happ hits 3rd not to score the 1st and 2nd batters of the game, but to get on base for Belli, the 4th batter of the game (this is from Ross’ mouth) which I think is a completely ass backwards take, but so be it

Right now if you moved Suzuki ahead of Swanson it would be hard to top.

AGAIN, Gomes sets up high on the zone and AGAIN the Cubs pay. What in the flying **** is he doing out there? You don't leave the ball up when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley is noob catching 101.

******* idiot.

Interestingly, an article I read indicated the Phillies also liked Schwarber at leadoff so he could knock in bottom of the order batters who got on base. I suppose having a DH now in the NL contributes to this reasoning.

Anyway, I look at baseball as a game of patience. Suzuki is a perfect example of patience paying off. Who knows, Wisdom just might make an impact at some point. Morel obviously did tonight.

Completely agree with everything you’ve said. However, for Suzuki, he was just straight benched for a week because he looked lost at the plate. Wisdom and Morel are still getting consistent looks despite rarely paying off.

Just wanted to stop in again and say I can’t believe how good the Cubs are playing this season. Literally didn’t even think we would have a winning record this year. Keep it going and Go Cubs Go!

If the Cubs can someone win every series from here out, they will get to 90 wins.
Because of the new(er) tiebreaker rule if we're tied, up 1 or down 1 to the Brewers going into the final series whichever team wins 2 of 3 wins the division. Currently 5-5 so winning the series gives you the TB.

When you look at the roster, it’s essentially just a bunch of role/platoon players, with the exception of Bellinger and Swanson. Maybe Happ is in that Belli/Swanson echelon, but it can be argued either way.

It really is incredible.

Also thought this was interesting. We're off the 14th and 18th. 14th is Steele's scheduled day so he'll get an extra days rest. If you bump him up a spot due to the day off on the 18th he'd be on schedule to pitch day 162.

Hopefully Ross will actually use him and not just say that he is "buried on the depth chart" like another player we called up 9/1.

It's a pretty unique approach to say "hey, you're playing too well at AAA. Let's get you up here to cool off a bit", but they seem committed to it.

I really thought they would use him in the second. Leaving Ross with "his guys" still available.

We desperately need a lefty in middle relief. So I'm betting he gets appearances.
