Did you make it to Des Moines today? I’m not too far from Newton, didn’t think things were too bad.

Well let me tell you about my day........

I decided to not go to Des Moines this morning because I figured I had enough racing stuff to keep me busy and get done what I needed to until Tuesday.

Everything is going along nicely, then about 2 PM I was bending a body panel in the sheet metal brake and somehow my phone slid into the break and got smashed. So I hurry to the Newton Verizon store where they tell me I need to go to some Assurion place in Ankeny that closes at 5. I drive from Newton to Ankeny, get to Assurion around 3:30. They say they can't fix it but since I have insurance they can send me a new one but it won't be here until late next week. I say no thanks and go to Verizon in Ankeny, pay off my broken phone and get a new one. Unfortunately it was broken so bad that I can't transfer anything except for contacts from the old one.

Start driving home and everything is fine until I get a mile from my house on the gravel road. Come up over a hill and bam stuck in a giant snow drift. Had my wife bring the truck down and had the guy we bought our house bring his skid loader. Had him dig a path so I could back the truck up and pull my Explorer out.

Fun times, fun times.

Most of my driveway and lengthy sidewalk I maintain were in pretty good shape after yesterday, but of the drifts that there were, bloody hell were they frozen and heavy.

Spouse went out at about 6pm and cleared stuff off. It looks nearly the same today.

It's kind of weird. A lot of stuff blew out - I see grass in places that were covered in inches of snow yesterday - and but for a few spots, it's like nothing else blew in to replace it despite the heavy winds.

Slid through a stop sign at the bottom of a hill this afternoon. Was going to turn right. Drove down the road and turned around for a 2nd try coming the other direction. Felt a little better about my mistake when I saw the next three cars coming down the hill all slide all the way through the intersection. Was sure I was going to see a t-bone at this 4-way stop but the two pickups missed by what must have been 6". I was stopped coming back from the other direction and was thinking "If they collide will the t-boned one slide downhill and into me?".

That stinks. It really does seem like south of 80 and it’s fine, but once your north of 80 it’s immediately horrible. Pretty crazy.

So, you failed to account for the giant snow drift? I bet that was taxing.

I sense a large increase in tax preparation fees coming...

I live on the very northern edge of Ankeny. Went out to start the car and let it run a bit before husband goes to work at o'dark-thirty tomorrow morning. (May not be the best thing, but this is a 2006 Taurus with 240k on her. She's been a trooper these past weeks.) I was just watching snow blow across our parking lot, and I understand why 35 is closed Ames and north of there. I could hear my back license plate rattling against the trunk with each gust.
