Amnestying Boozer wouldn't have made the Bulls better. The Bulls weren't getting any one better than him in free agency. If they would have used it on him they probably keep Deng instead of Boozer but I don't think that makes the Bulls better as Chicago has more wing depth than frontcourt depth.

They most certainly did not have home cooking in overtime. I'm not that impressed with the Wizards, and the Bulls minutes look to be catching up with them finally. It also feels like Thibs is getting out coached by Wittman so far this series.
There's only so much Thibs can do, the Bulls just don't have guys who can create their own shots. Thibs is a good regular season coach because he gets his team to buy in and just play harder than anyone else. But when the playoffs come around and every team is locked in and playing hard night and night out, the Bulls don't really have that extra gear to go to, they've already been playing at the level all year. His style also tends to run guys into the ground by the postseason.
We'll have to agree to disagree. Free agent forwards in 2012 and 2013 who could have produced at a similar clip for less money - Nic Batum, Carl Landry, Paul Millsap, David West, and Elton Brand. I'm guessing any of these guys could have put up close to a 15/9 for way less than 15 mil per year.
Right, I don't disagree with that, but like you said they would produce at a similar clip. I don't think putting any of those guys in for Boozer makes the Bulls much better. So from the Bulls ownership perspective, you're getting similar production but paying much more for that production since you still have to pay Boozer if you amnesty him.
That's true, but that assumes the Bulls wouldn't pinch pennies and that they would re-invest that cap space in more than one player. Ask any Bulls fans if they would rather have Carlos Boozer at 15 mil or, say, Paul Millsap and Jarrett Jack for the same amount? I get that Boozer's salary would still have to be paid, but it's Chicago - a huge market with a rabid fanbase. We're not talking about Milwaukee or Sacramento, where the owners were supposedly hemhorraging money.
I agree with what you're saying, but as any Bulls fan can tell you, that's a big assumption, the Bulls ownership is very stingy. It sounds like they still won't bring Mirotic over this summer due to his large buyout. Having Millsap and Jack probably would have made the Bulls a couple games better (Millsap's contract is a great deal for the Hawks), but signing those two guys wouldn't make them title contenders. Plus if they had signed those two they would have no cap room for this summer, they would be locked into a good, not great, second round ceiling for another year. Waiting until after this season to amnesty Boozer gives them a chance to chase Carmelo (or overpay for Lance Stephenson) and try to get back to being an elite team.
Since you mentioned Milwaukee, it blew my mind that the Bucks sold for nearly twice ($550M vs $280M) as much last week as the 76ers were sold for in 2011..
Bulls can only pay $600k of his $3mil+ buyout due to the CBA. Anything beyond has to be paid by the player. Mirotic is making over $4mil at Real Madrid. So any deal to bring him over has to be larger than the $4mil/year+his portion of the buyout. Basically bringing in Mirotic in the summer would limit the Bulls to no other major free agents. Mirotic would push the Bulls over the cap even if they amnesty Boozer. (I think, I have not verified that recently) Meaning they could only sign other players using exceptions.
I was way off on this. Expected Salary cap would be $62mil. If the Bulls amnesty Boozer their expected salary would be 47 mil. Giving them $14mil in cap space. Of course that is a team consisting of 6 players. (Rose, Noah, Gibson, Butler, Dunleavy, Snell)
You're basically right, the $600k is what the Bulls can pay without it counting against the salary cap, they can pay his whole buyout put it counts as part of his contract and against the cap. The Bulls can use an exception to sign him since he's no longer bound to a rookie contract as of this summer. But as you said, it's unlikely you're going to be able to get him for cheap. He's supposed to be a stud though so he might be worth it even if he is the only impact free agent the Bulls sign.
