O-Line Question

Newell didn't beat out JGJ. He beat out foster as the the 5th starter. The easiest way to think about it is wins above replacement. JGJ has a higher WAR at tackle than center so they moved him there

Julian Good Jones is our best lineman. But maybe not our best center this year. His versatility gives us flexibility. For the good of the team, Julian Good Jones moved to center. We had no one else as good last year and wanted to keep the redshirt for Newell.

Glad Newell has emerged at center and has grabbed that spot. Now Julian Good Jones can use his versatility to move to LT for the good of the team. Foster is still developing.

We are light years ahead of where we were before. We actually are developing a line with depth.

I was listening to the radio the other morning and they were discussing NFL lineman salaries and how interior lineman salaries are starting to catch up to tackles. The analysis is that the ability to run the ball and hold up to inside rush has been under valued in terms of protecting QB’s and coaches/owners are recognizing the value across the line in aggregate, and not over-estimating left tackle value.

I believe our staff had recognized that long ago. Get the best 5 on the field and figure out the fit from there.

All right, so it sounds like this is not something to panic about, but kind of in-between.

Newell at C and JGJ at LT > JGJ at C and someone else (e.g. Foster) at LT

Thanks all for the thoughts and insight. Maybe this whole o-line development and grading process is a good question for Ben Bruns to wax poetic on sometime.

It is a great thing. Newell able to grab center position and give us at least as good and potentially better than last year. Julian Good Jones moves to LT and is an upgrade over a young developing Foster. Mueller emerging and grabbing a LG spot. And Meeker and Knipfel on the right will only get better. And we have young guys continuing to develop that will provide depth.

This is something to celebrate. Much better than Newell not even an option. Not an in between thing at all. Remember when we were told last year that Lanning switching to LB was working out? That worked out great. Stay positive.

I hope someone asks about this directly in either post game or on tuesday. I just can’t believe the “didn’t want to throw Newell in at Kinnick” line of thinking.
