NYC trip ideas

I have been to NYC many times. My suggestion is if you really want to experience the city get away from the touristy areas and perhaps walk some side streets or if you have extra time check out one of the other bouroughs besdies manhattan (I would reccommend Brooklyn, not as much to do but some of the people are wonderful)

Yes, thanks. I already planned to fly in and then subway and taxi. I've been there before and drove through Times Square, but now I know better! Thanks for the other ideas.

Unless your flying, you had better allow more than an hour an half to get tho the Baseball Hall of Fame. Cooperstown is just over 200 miles from NYC. In the summer it is a beautiful drive up there.
If a person has the time and is a history buff, West Point is within an hour or so of the city.
 
I've taken the Staten Island Ferry over to Staten Island before sunset. You can see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on the way over. Wait in the terminal until after dark and then take the ferry back to Manhatten after the lights are on. You will see the Statue as well as all the lit up skyscrapers.
 
When I went to West Point a friend I went to college with from Jersey drove. So I don't know about public transportation. Its 58 miles from NYC mostly north on the Palisades parkway. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty are pretty awesome. Ground Zero is a must. There are actually some amazing churches that you can tour if you are into historical buildings. I would say the most awesome thing is the Carnegie Deli. It is this little shop that makes the most ridiculous sandwich ever. It is definitely worth the time to go. Also the Natural History Museum is a good time.
 
If you're a beer fan, take the subway across the river to Brooklyn, and go to the Brooklyn Brewery. It's a great beer. Come to think of it, it's served on tap at most bars and pubs in manhattan too...
 
Rent the cult classic, "The Warriors" and retrace their battle from Central Park to Coney Island. Walk down the boardwalk at dawn clinking empty glass bottles together from your fingertips, squeeling , "Warriors, come out and playayayay"...:wink:
 
Went last summer. Many good ideas on here.

Cooperstown is further away than 1-1/2 hours someone said. A must if you are a baseball fan but you should probably budget 3-4 hours (depending on traffic).

West Point is much closer and very scenic.

I got free Yankee tickets from a relative that works with the club and had great seats but I noticed that at the hotel there was a number to call if you wanted tickets...they were above face but not by much.

If you have had family come to America through Ellis Island you could easily spend a whole day there (if you are into that stuff). If you did have a relative or relatives come through I would suggest paying to use their computers to do the research (you will then have access through the internet via your home computer once you return home as well)...we found two relatives and looked at their information on the manifests...very neat.

I pretty much concur with most of the other things I have seen on here as well.

The nice thing about doing the Statue of Liberty is Ellis Island is almost always packaged with it - you get to see both islands for the same price.

If you love architecture like I do, there are several buildings that you must check out - Woolworth building, Flatiron building, St. Patrick's, Rockefeller Center, Trump Tower, Empire St Building, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station. I'd also say check out Citicorp Center as it's one of the oddest buildings you will ever see (although I have yet to see it myself)

The cool thing about the Empire St Building, Chrysler Building, St Patricks, Trump Tower, and Rockefeller Center is they're all relatively close to each other - all in midtown. I'd recommend going up to the top of the Empire St Building as you get an incredible view of the city up there (I think you can also see 8 different states while up there - New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and others).

If you get the chance, I recommend checking out Fire Island/Jones Beach on Long Island. Incredible historical beach. If you head further east on Fire Island there's a pretty sweet lighthouse there as well.
