Wife and I are off to NYC in mid-July for a short 5 night stay just for fun. Looking for some ideas?? We already have a reservation for the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I was thinking about the following:

Broadway show (best way to get tickets?)
Yankees (what the best way to buy GOOD tickets for one game?)
Ground Zero
A museum day for the wife

Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

The Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum are must-see's. The great thing is, they're free. They have a "suggested donation", but you don't have to pay. You can pay whatever you like. For a little romance, a hansom cab ride through Central Park is awesome. I always enjoy the East Village and some of the funky shops there. Canal Street on a Saturday is where you can get a "Fendi" handbag for $20. Always fun! A good way to see the city and learn about it is to take the Gray Line Bus Tour. You can get tix in Times Square. The nice thing is you can get off the bus, wander for a while, and then get on the next bus through. It's well worth it. Just a few things off the top of my head

My wife and I are going in May... she's never been.

We're doing Letterman (you can only reserve tickets a few months in advance, and it's general admission seating)
Broadway (there's always different shows, and you can find cheap tickets day of at some off broadway ticket vendors - just follow the crowds around mid afternoon in Times Square)
Canal St (if your wife likes shopping - this is the knock off capital of the world)
We're doing a baseball day for me (cooperstown - about an hour and a half from the city, and then Yankee Stadium, remember it's the final year of the stadium before the new one opens next year - I do sport stadium design for an architectural firm, so I can get tickets easily. Sorry on that one. Just do stub hub)
Gotham Comedy Club
5th Avenue shopping (again if you just want to walk the streets - I can't afford much on that street)
late night pizza place run - go out for drinks at jazz club which are always good there, then leave and stop by a NYC pizza joint and get a slice, you gotta have one
um, the big cathedral - I think it's St. Thomas.

And of course - all architecture there is amazing. I can give you a whole separate list for that...

I'm trying to think of other big things to do while there as you'd need many months to hit everything special about the city.

I saw something on TV about some famous naked singing cowboy out there. I wouldn't check it out but its a suggestion...

Need to hit Central park for sure, Empire State Building

Central Park is absolutely massive, but it is really neat to see. The hotel from Home Alone 2 is really near it as well. You could probably spend an entire day doing the Empire State Building and Central Park. I would save the Empire State Building for night if you do it. The view is amazing.

Central Park is nice and all - but if you're there for only 5 days and such, there's only so much you can do, and central park can be seen (obviously not experienced) while walking down the street to your next location, or driving by in a taxi. The site seeing, the local flavors, etc are more worth your time, IMO.

Some good stuff. Keep it coming. We've been before, but only for a couple of days and we did Central park, the Empire State Building and FAO Schwarz on that trip.

We went to the Top of the Rock (top of Rockafeller Plaza, Home of NBC).

We went at like 9:15 at night (they close at 10:30) and it was really awesome. You are a few blocks away from times square, which allows you to see most of it.

Good tickets to a Yankees game from a ticket broker will be 2-3 times face, ($200-$300 per ticket) but that will get you in the lower level between the bases. I find the view a little better a little further back and you save $50 bucks a ticket or more. If you are going July 4th weekend, like my wife and I are, you will have to pay more for the tickets because the Red Sox are in town.

Make sure you get to Yankee Stadium two hours before the scheduled first pitch so you have plenty of time to go to monument park, it is worth the extra time. Take the subway out and back, it is interesting.

Someone earlier suggested the Gray Line tours and I agree 100%. They are good and you can do it at your own speed. Make sure you do both the uptown and the downtown routes. Both of these will take a day combined if you do it right.

This far in advance you can get some fairly decent tickets to Broadway shows on the internet, just google Braodway tickets and the sites will pop up you need. Trying to buy discount tickets can take up a lot af valuable time trying to save $50 bucks.

Have fun, my wife and I love to go to New York City. There are a lot of great small restaurants you can go to that do not cost and arm and a leg, just ask the hotel employees, they are a great source of information.

I don't know about the best place to buy, but other baseball parks I've been to, if there is a weekday day game (the Yankees have 1pm Wednesday afternoon games on July 9th and 23rd) good tickets are usually easy to get. You might even be able to order them from the ticket office.

Don't get a rental car! The subway will take you everywhere you need to go. It looks pretty confusing at first but is actually pretty easy. People are willing to help. During game days just follow the jerseys! Stubhub or ebay are the best.

Last year for both Yankees and Mets stadiums. Little Italy and China town are right next to each other. You can pretty much get fake bags anywhere now. According to my wife the best ones (actual real ones tht "fell off the back of a truck) are down by the Statue of Liberty. Everytime we go into the city she comes back with two more purses. Get a watch for yourself!

Someone mentioned the Rockefeller square. You can do a tour of NBC studios, you can see the following sets:

Studio 1A - Home of Today Show
Studio 3A - Home of Dateline
Studio 3C - Home of NBC Nightly News
Studio 6A - Home of Late Night with Conan O'Brien
Studio 8G - Home of Football Night in America Studio
8H - Home of Saturday Night Live

ShopNBC.com - NBC Studio Tour

Plus is is right by radio city music hall and other great sites.

Statue of Liberty/ Wallstreet & twin towers are right next to each other (easily walkable)

Madison Sq Garden/ Times Square/ Rockafeller/ & Central Park are close to each other as well.

My advice is don't plan too much, leave some time just for walking and seeing the city. Every corner has something else to see. TONS of things to do and see.

You need to do this tour bus. The wife and I did it and it is for 2 days and you can get off and on at as many places as you want. It goes to all the major attractions and what you pay for the adult 2 day passes is still cheaper than cab fare. Basically you get off at one attraction and can take as long as you like there and then get back on the bus when the next one comes by and go to another attraction. If I remember right I think a bus comes by every 20 minutes, so it's not like you would be stuck at one place.

We went to a little shop in the garment district, looked around and then the lady showed us the 'hidden room' in the back. I think all of my aunts, cousins, fiance, etc got at least two...

Yeah they are all over the place. The first time we went into the city we were in China town and somebody came up to us and asked if we were looking for Coach purses. Of course my wife jumped at the chance. We were then being lead down a side street and had to get in a van. We almost didn't get in but we noticed the van was blocked in (wasn't going anywhere) plus it was about noon so plenty of foot traffic. However once we got in the van she shut the doors. Of course my wife was oblivious to what was going on since she was salivating over the purses. She kept asking my opinion and I kept saying, "Who cares, pick one and lets get the F outta here." She ended up getting 4 purses.

After we got out though we noticed every other person we saw had a garbage sack full of purses.

This is great! My whole family (wife & me, my parents, my sister and her boyfriend) are all going this summer, and we're looking for ideas, too. This helps!
