Non-5 Second Call

Due to a prior commitment I was unable to watch the game last night, and I probably won't watch the DVR of it either (why watch a loss?)

Honest question here; had we ever seen these refs before? It will speak volumes if none of them advance in the tournament to call any more games.

The key is to play well enough that ******** calls don’t determine the outcome of the game. We played like complete and utter ****. We didn’t make the obvious adjustments, we didn’t play together, thus we didn’t win.

That said, a ref standing there counting is going to have some variability, it wasn’t like he let him stand there for 10 seconds or something.

The two things are not mutually exclusive; you can play a crappy game AND have to deal with crappy officiating along the way.

He clearly counted 5 with his arm. So unless he is so incompetent that he started counting 1 on the 2nd swing of his arm, he intentionally gave them a timeout after he counted to 5. He’s got some ‘splainin to do Lucy!

I challenge all of you who DVR'd the game to pullout your smartphone and time it. I got 5.5 from the time the ref blows the whistle until the OSU player motions for a timeout, 5.8 seconds in between the 2 whistles.

That isn’t uncommon. Officials almost always give players a hair longer than the rule stipulates, whether it is on an inbounds pass or a three seconds in the paint violation. An extra half second isn’t egregious enough to warrant outrage over. If you want to complain about the officiating, do so over legitimate gripes like the phantom kicked ball and phantom out of bounds call on Shayok along the baseline.

Not only was it blatantly one sided but the style of play allowed clearly favored a less talented and more physical Ohio state. They refused to call contact when our guards drove and not send a great free throw team to the line.

Welcome to Big Ten basketball. That’s the way half of the conference plays, and unfortunately the officials usually let them get away with it.

I would also argue that bad officiating can make it very difficult to get rolling. The kicked ball and Shayok OB both came at crucial moments. Lard BS second fouls started the streak of 15 empty possessions. Etc...

The Lard call...the second one I believe....would have had Johnny Orr, Tim Floyd, and Larry E. Tee'd up...and I would love them for that. Bill Self would too. Hell, Fred might have walked onto court and stood there quietly until he got one too to make his point on national television. Prohm was just too passive in the given situation of what the referees were doing to us. Did we play like crap? yes. Might we win if a hero chunk or two go in there in the last two minutes? maybe.
Were we victims of unintentional bias by referees? Absolutely...Just a mess really.

I posted before that they were brutal because we had almost no breaks go our way. You'd like to think players can rise above that, but at some point it can add up.

If you can, go back to the phantom kick and look at Tyrese's face. Guy just looked defeated.

Agree......Maybe something like your coach fighting back might help that morale??? I know some people are more effete to appreciate a fighting coach...but I like it.

We know at this point Prohm isn't a fighter, but I would have liked to see him get a little more fired up at the officials last night.

It is a fine line to walk though; with how close we were technical FTs and OSU possession could have been a killer just as easily. Not sure I would've trusted those refs to let Prohm vent before slapping him with a T

Agree. Love Babb and Hali but they are not guys that are going to score a lot. Jacobson either. Lard can if he gets in the right situation. He was good last night. THT is too inconsistent, Wigginton really came on at the end, so if he is back at this level next year it will help a lot. Just really need a couple of guys that can create their own shot, and then of course make it.

Except in this particular case, the official DID count to 5, THEN granted a timeout. Did you watch the video?

Prohm needs to stop being a passive *****. Grow some balls and help your team. How much are we paying for a coach that does turtle imitations with his tongue and put on chapstick 20 times a game?

Review of all calls that deal with a time element of the game. It’s done for shot clock and last second shots. I hate making more reviews but it makes sense this should be reviewable.

Yeah, they can do 5 minute reviews to see if .001 seconds comes off the clock but cant seem to review plays that actually influence the outcome of the game like a 5 second count.

This 100%. I see no reason why not to review dead ball change of possession calls.

Who knows why these refs were so horrible, but they were. But obviously the more hurtful factor was the fact that most of our team acted timid, afraid to drive, afraid to shoot, stagnant on rebounds.

This wasn't Team A but neither was it Team B from this past season. This was something new just for the tournament. Other than Shayok they just seemed overwhelmed by the whole experience.
