Under 1 minute left in the game, 1st and 10 lining up in victory formation. Snap the ball, down the ball, and the entire team (on the field and on the sidelines) do horns down. Take the penalty and continue downing the ball. Game ends. Everyone Horns down as they run off the field.

I sure hope we can do that this yr!

Someone from Iowa just called into the Dan Patrick Show to talk/complain about this, referenced that he's an Iowa State fan. Started up a conversation with everyone on the show. Good stuff.

I don't get why this is such a big deal. The official was asked about it specifically, and basically he said if you do it at a Texas player it's a penalty, and If you do it at the crowd and it's not directed at a player it's most likely not. How is this not perfectly OK? It is no question an antagonistic gesture, regardless of where it is directed. It can not be interpreted in any other way. So if you go up and do it in the face of a Texas player why shouldn't it be a taunting penalty? Same could be said if a Texas player runs up to an ISU player and shows the horns right in his face after scoring a touchdown. It's going to be flagged. Basically all he said was you can't taunt opposing players, which is exactly what the rule is intended for.

I know of no situation where a Texas player has been flagged for flashing the horns in the direction of an opposing player or opposing bench but it has happened.

That is the problem. If the horns up and horns down are treated the same, I don't think there is an issue.

I guess I'll have to watch closer how the players do it, but the horns gesture is not necessarily antagonistic by itself, so just doing it on the field of play isn't quite the same IMO. There is no question what the intent of horns down is. But that's always going to be a problem with a rule like taunting. It is subjective to a certain degree.

Can a player get called for taunting if they flash the horns down at the Texas fans after scoring a touchdown?
I won't be for taunting, but this, now? Texas does not deserve anything special from the Big 12 officials. They have ruined the Big 12.

Horns down forever.

I’m not a band guy but I know our band has a lot of talented people. How about the band composes an arrangement called Horns Down? Some upbeat song that suddenly becomes soft percussion only and the band (and crowd) yells simultaneously “Horns Down” while the horn section lowers their instruments. Refs can’t flag us for that, especially if we do it every game prior to Texas. We’d probably get as much media attention as the Stanford band when they got Iowa all butthurt during the Rose Bowl.

With Texas going to the SEC the horns down rule should become null and void. Display early and often.
