It’s turned into exactly what I thought it would be. What started as a good faith effort, such as the Iowa Pork ad campaign is just pay to play. And honestly, it’s gotten to the point where I’m pretty ambivalent to college sports- and I used to be able to watch/engage from College Gameday to PAC 12 after dark.

What this will eventually turn into is the super league, whether the B1G and $EC separate from everyone else or not. And that will be the end of ISU athletics. I have no interest in watching a super league that doesn’t include ISU. If we want to prevent it, there needs to be rules- contracts for set terms, registered agents, caps and no unlimited transfers without penalties. If/when the super league does come without ISU will be the day I stop watching any college athletics (and that feeling sucks)

I was at ISU in an era where we could identify with players because they would come to State gym or the Rec Center after that opened and play pickup games with the common folks.
Seneca Wallace used to play pickup basketball in the offseason at the Lied Rec Center. Once saw Jake Sullivan there putting up some shots too but I don't think he was interested in playing a pickup game.

The 1 thing the portal is going to ruin is it is becoming very rare for guys to play 3 or 4 years with the same school. This is why fans love the legends we've had at ISU and I'm very thankful for Tamin Lipsey as he's going to be one of the rare 4 year guys in this era we are in now. Milan is going into year 3 and could be another one of those guys too. For football I am also very thankful we have Rocco as he could easily hit the portal and got paid well, but instead he's become the face of the program and given back to the community and embraced the culture here. He's creating a legacy here and guys like him give us some hope that not every kid is just in it for the money in this current NIL era.

Nothing is stopping the NCAA from letting schools attempt to sign players to contracts with specific non-compete wording. The limitation preventing them from doing that is entirely self inflicted by their own rules. "Pay for Play" is only a dirty word in the world of college athletics. Everywhere else it's just how things work.

Don't forget that recent legal cases have made non-compete clauses very, very difficult to enforce. I've had several before and always respected them but I know several that have had no problem threatening to sue and getting out of it. That was before the recent legal precedents that I think would limit the effectiveness of them in these cases.

But I am not a lawyer and slept in my own bed last night.

As are a lot of fans from universities similar to ISU from across the nation. Greed is quickly destroying what was good about college athletics.
