Next Years Team

The last NCAA tourney's there have been a "what if's" due to either injuries(Babb, Niang) and Aaron Craft love by the officials. There is none of that going into this off season. Nothing in the mirror but their reflections. Sometimes that has the affect on people that losing with an excuse does not. And if CFH is the coach we think he is.......and the seniors are the players we think they are.......maybe that reality will only strengthen their resolve to accomplish next year what they could not this year.

I love the people who say this team wasn't that talented or didn't have heart completely disregard the fact we were the #9 team in the ENTIRE country going into the tournament. Today sucked and will suck for quite some time but no point digging into anything more than we played really bad today

Again, NO ONE is saying this team doesn't have that much talent! What is being said s that the talent level isn't what many on here believe it to be or want it to be. There's a difference.

The earlier leader for most mentions during a Iowa St game next year is "UAB"

Funny how some threads are going on about Fred's a "good recruiter" but can't coach, then I get here, and people are saying we need one more level of talent to be a true national powerhouse. I come down much more on the latter side. Fred's done great, McGyner work on a roster construction that was a work in progress in many ways and certainly not elite...

Morris = 4*
Naz = 2*/3*
Hogue = JUCO
Niang = 4*
McKay = JUCO
---
BDJ = "misfit" transfer
Nader = "misfit" transfer
Thomas = 4*

None were elite by any means as recruits. None, save probably Monte (maybe McKay) are likely to have a shot at, much less a substantial career in, the NBA.

That's 40% of our starting lineup was 40% of IHCC's starting lineup not too long ago. Granted, that's an elite JUCO program, but impress enough to me you can almost win the Big 12 with that as a coaching job. Fred's a better coach than recruiter, so far.

Adding "one step up" there... finally breaking into the one-and-done pipeline, maybe landing a few 5* that might stick around a few years, would be great... much as I love how Monte and Georges had developed, and how much Ejim worked himself from a 3* to POY, and what diamonds in the rough were Kane and Royce, and solid role guys were transfers like McGee and Babb, we still need a Fizer beast if we really want to be something in March.

Just to put UAB in some context...

http://sagarin.com/sports/cbsend.htm

UAB = 145
USC = 60
TTU = 127
KSU = 70

Yeah, that was our worst loss of the year. No way around that. Oh well.

If you think Royce was a "diamond in the rough" I don't know what to tell you.

Sorry but its not poor attitude. I understand you are frustrated. I am too. But they have shown tremendous heart and positive attitude over this season. His else do you explain the last several comebacks? They just have some pretty significant holes that were exposed. The margin for error was slim and it bit them in the butts.

Very true. It took hair-on-fire effort to overcome the lack of rebounding and the streakinessof our shooters. And that is hard to muster every game over a long season. Another athletic big man and a more reliable 3-pt shooter who can also defend would do wonders.

Next year, add Cooke, Williams, burton and diallo. That is a lot more offense and defense to add to the roster than we are losing of houge (who I'll miss) and bdj (who disappeared).

This team should be a lot better

Plus I believe next year's team goes into the tourney with a chip on their shoulder, and will know better than to get caught up in the pre-tournament hype (though I doubt we'll get much next year, which is fine). Probably a good lesson for the fans too, at least for me.

This is not accurate
Lol.

When you keep outperforming projections with inputs not as sought after as your W-L peers, you are doing some really nice things. Of course, that is why Fred is universally regarded as one of the best at gaining a mismatch advantage and could have had several NBA jobs or almost anyny college job.

This is not accurate

Sure it is. We have some really nice college players but it's not top level talent. There are lots of teams we are better than that have a lot more talent than we do. We didn't have an NBA guy on the the team last year that went to the Sweet 16 and won the Big 12 tournament. We don't have one on this years team either (Maybe McKay), yet we won the Big 12 tournament and finished with 25 wins. Fred gets A LOT out of the players he has. He's a magician. Hell, Melvin Ejim won Big 12 player of the year.

We don't have top college level talent, but we have good talent and talent that often this year just didn't show up. I expect off night's shooting, but off nights because of stuff like not boxing out or taking bad shots are much more frustrating.

I at least know this, we lost to a UAB team today we have a lot more talent then.

Is going to be another good rebounder next year? You can have a the good guards you want but if they are missing someone needs to grab some rebounds.

We have top 25-30ish talent and started the day in the top ten.
Somebody is doing something right.

T-H-I-S-!

I totally agree our talent level is way overrated on here.

Fred has done some really nice things with a group of unheralded players.

There is good talent on this team not great. When everything is going well it is not a big deal. Someone usually steps up and plays above their talent level and this team finds away to win. When no players step up and play above there talent level this team got into trouble. When you have games like today with player playing below their talent level really bad things happen. There really is no elite player on this team that can take over any game at any point.

Well said Gray.

Who on this board has been overstating our talent? We have 3 all conference players, that's a lot of talent and a good reason why we were seeded where we were. To say "our talent level is way overrated on here" sounds like an overreaction to a bad loss.

Why can't people accept that Fred and the players aren't untouchable? Something was just "off" with the team this year. Fred's a top 10 coach, no doubt about it, but sometimes I wish he'd get just a bit mad. This team just seemd to lack discipline. Maybe this is what is needed for Fred to take teams further in the future.

Didn't often show up? LMAO. There is that CF fantasy world again.

Teams don't show up. It happens, although very rarely under Hoiberg. The fact is, we don't have the talent in which we can deviate far from our best and always win. The talent level between ISU and UAB was close enough that not making shots was going to be a problem. That team has much better rebounding talent than we do.

The fact we win so often is a hell of a job by the players and staff. We lose to maybe two or three teams every year that has tangibly less talent. That is better than almost any other program. It sucks it happened today but CF has gotten spoiled.
