Yesterday’s game against Houston was essentially a preview of our roster next year without what happens in the transfer market. Offense was rough but that insanely tight defense kept us in the game. Otz will get a couple of scoring guards in the portal. This team will be just fine next year. That German kid could be a big deal also.
I was a little concerned Nojus still barely played even with 63 minutes of playing time freed up (concerned on his progress, not on TJ's playing-time decisions). I guess he's still a freshman though.

So in other words there's a good chance ISU is still good next year and it doesn't make sense to say yesterday was a preview of next year's team.
Don’t bother conversing with that guy. He has been running his mouth as a know it all on here for years. My favorite was when he said he had watched extensive footage of Hallice Cooke at Oregon State and he was way better than Matt Thomas and would start over him at ISU

Holding onto something from 10 years ago, huh? Not everyone’s right about everything. Hell, our coaches have whiffed on recruits but you don’t go around saying the coaches whiff and calling them dumb like you’re doing to me. I said I saw some of his stuff from Oregon State and he looked good. If you take Cooke’s numbers from Oregon State he severely regressed after a good freshman year coming to Iowa State. Matt Thomas really developed between sophomore and junior year and turned out amazing. I also admitted I was wrong to you 7-8 years ago and you still want to throw this one in my face.

I believe TJ knows what he is doing. He is bringing in 5 new recruits. I have to assume he is confident is what their capabilities are and how they might be used next year. Why would he bring 5 new recruits in on a 13 man roster if he wasn't planning on using them.

We will have a good team if he has Lipsey, Milan, Jefferson, Heise and Jackson locked for next year. In fact, I would be shocked if TJ doesn't already have agreements with all 5 of them. He should spend what he needs to lock up Lipsey, Jefferson, and Milan, in that order. The rest will stay if those 3 are staying. If anybody else doesn't agree to the number available, then the staff needs to looking for portal options.

My main point is TJ knows his budget, if we know one thing about TJ, he is being transparent with his team now, and will want to know what everyone is doing before the portal opens. Just like last year.

Sure, but if you’re expecting freshman guards to start immediately that’s a tough feat. Otz will get a guard or two that can score big in the portal. Bench should be deeper next year and if the guys can develop then the team will be very tough to beat. I like Batemon a lot, but he’s not likely a starter next year as a freshman. Otz will get a one year scoring guard and Batemon will get bench minutes and hopefully be ready to take over as a sophomore.

We’ve had two freshman point guards start under Otz. A freshman playing next to a senior Lipsey is a much easier task in comparison. Given we won’t have much in terms of being able to buy replacements for Jones and Gilbert, there’s a good chance a freshman will be needed to pick up a good portion of the load

It’s going to be fun to see how things unfold, assuming NIL doesn’t disrupt things. Which is a big assumption

Not like we’ve had deep pockets before this and we’ve always added huge pieces in the portal. This year we only really need 1 combo guard and 1 backup 5.

We only need that IF we retain our returning talent.

The market has gone up, even for unheralded guys. Plus, now anyone we target becomes heralded. It’s not a question of whether we lose someone, but when. Even with salary caps in the pros, guys leave to get theirs

It’s already had significant opportunity cost. In a previous era we probably land guys like Darrion Williams which makes last year Final Four caliber or Hadley this year. As frustrating as it is as a fan, it must be even more frustrating as a coach.

The mid-tier and low-tier BIG and SEC will start to climb in hierarchy in basketball, and they’ll come to dominate that sport like they do in football

Are any of the freshmen good enough to play extended minutes next year? Is Industriatis, Rock etc... going to be capable to play minutes next year? Tamin played as a freshman, Monte played as a freshman...it can be done. Of course I guess it depends on who is available in the portal too...

I think people are discounting the freshman we have coming in too much because we've never had so much talent like this coming in. Any one of the five could play next year and I fully expect 2 or 3 or even 4 to have decent roles.
I agree...don't tell any of these incoming freshman right now that they won't play...they're probably pretty confident they can.

Batemon is our highest-rated recruit (#43 overall on 247, #7 combo guard). Some posters are expecting him to play a lot. He's not very big though; listed at 6-3 170.

Tamin played starter minutes out of necessity after that transfer guard from Temple was injured pre-season and out for the whole year. Worked out well and likely he would have been playing a lot by the end of the year, but I don't think him playing 30 minutes a game was the initial plan.

Yeah, NIL is changing so rapidly that it could destroy our chances of grabbing the guard we need in the offseason unless we shell out some big bucks. I trust Otz will get someone good, whether close to a Gilbert or Jones level is tbd due to NIL.

I’ll start with I am a We Will contributor.

Hopefully we are in position to retain the guys the staff wants to keep.

As for additions I don’t think Jones would have been a huge price. But it’s important to know consider giving a mid major guy the opportunity to be one of the lead scorers for a top ten team definitely has value. Whether we get one or not remains to be seen but there’s no reason not to try.

After that I think Nojus and the incoming freshmen gives us solid options off the bench with guys that will have the opportunity to get serious minutes.

Now replacing Chatfield is much easier and reasonably inexpensive.

I think we’ve seen the staff do a great job following how the small market professional franchises build rosters

Generally, defense and then young and/or unproven talent as the base is the most cost effective way to compete. A base that hopefully surrounds a few “home grown” all-conference talent that we use most of our limited payroll on to retain.

I hope the AD enables TJ to have 15 “scholarship” players when the limit increases. With freshman and under the radar (cheap) transfers, the hit rate will be lower. Having a couple more incoming lotto tickets would be a positive

So because of two guys you’re assuming it’s a lock for freshman to start now? The majority of freshman will not start. Our highest rated recruit ever barely played. It’s unknown how ready high school kids will be as a freshman.
Lipsey had to start because Hunter transferred to TX.
