Obviously our collective love for CMC is deep and wide. That being said, he's being dropped as a serious contender for the Browns job, and the Buckeyes job should Meyer step away. He'd likely get a contract worth roughly $50 mil in Cleveland, and probably half that in Columbus. The Browns would be a good opportunity, given there really aren't high expectations, they have a good defense, a good potential franchise QB to build around, is his favorite NFL team, and "home". And if it didn't work out, he'd have be welcomed back to college football at the first opportunity. I'm not as sold on the Buckeyes for him just due to the high expectations and that it just doesn't feel like his personality fits with the shady environment of Ohio State.
I don't think he should leave. Building a legacy like Bill Snyder, Bobbie Bowden, Hayden Fry, etc. would have a far more lasting impact than being another NFL head coach that will be forgotten in history or another Ohio State coach that either doesn't live up to expectations or meets the same expectations that were created by the success of previous coaches. He's the perfect match for Iowa State and hopefully it's a lifetime match.
Regardless, if it turns out "he gone", who's the replacement? Next year we have the talent to have our most legitimate shot at the CFP ever. Would Tom Manning leave being an assistance in the NFL to be our head coach? That would keep the transition as "quiet" as possible. Most of the players and coaching staff would know him well. Should limit transfers and recruits from backing out. He'd be affordable and we'd know he learned how to manage a program from Campbell. That'd be my vote.
