Shoot. Just when it's getting fun, Iowa's found a coach! Sounds like they'll announce a new guy on Tuesday.

I think this is going to be like our hiring of Chizik. Someone under the radar who's going to wow the Hawks(and perhaps us).

Iowa apparently has a new men’s basketball coach.

Who replaces Steve Alford remains the question.

Athletic director Gary Barta will hold a press conference “within the next 24 hours,” Hawkeye sports information director Phil Haddy said late this afternoon.

Haddy would not disclose the nature of the press conference.

When asked directly if Barta was close to introducing a new basketball coach, Haddy said:

“You can draw your own conclusions.”

Barta has been in Atlanta, Ga., the site of the Final Four, searching for a replacement to Alford. He resigned on March 23 to accept the head coaching position at New Mexico.

They are doing flight aware as well. There is a plane headed from Atlanta to Indy right now that is possibly Barta's plane. Indy is home to Butler University. Todd Lickliter is their coach. Jon Miller just reported 70% chance it's Lickliter as well.

its not majerus though. Not exactly a WOW hire either.

but don't get me wrong, he is solid but doesn't scare me from an ISU perspective. I think a lot of hawks will be disappointed but not publicly.

Lickliter would be a good pickup for Iowa.

They could be picking up Jamaal Tinsley in Indy though; he would make a good "under the radar" candidate and send ISU fans into hysterics. You never know.

it will be the butler coach...if you look at their schedule this year they had a heck of a run. Beat Indiana, purdue, gonzaga, tennesse, notre dame, maryland in the tourney.

he has reached the sweet 16 2 times...pretty impressive record. and he was the National Basketball Coaches Association coach of the year

Isn't Atlanta home to Georgia Tech as well? Paul Hewitt doesn't have much of a reason to leave, though...

EDIT: Don't forget what Atlanta is hosting, either. Barta could've been there trying to woo one of the Final Four coaches, didn't succeed, and is now announcing Plan B.

Atlanta is where the search firm is located.

Barta was at the tournament in Atlanta as many coaches attend the event, according to several releases. However, I can guarantee he was not trying to get one of the Final Four coaches.

The fact that the plane is going to Indy is far more substantive.

I think Pollard has written the book on how to hire a coach when he hired Chizik. He kept things quiet and kept the media and fans guessing. Barta seems to be taking a similar path.

Seems like a solid hire, but not exactly a household name. I thought Barry Collier would have a lot of success at NU after his run at Butler, but it didn't work out that way. Frankly, I am breathing a sigh of relief as an ISU fan that they did not get Majerus or Crean.

have to agree. not the wow hire I was scared was going

to occur. He is very solid and may end up great at Iowa but I feel a lot safer with him there than the media circus that would have been majerus or even crean to a lesser extent.

So the thinking must be that it is Likliter and not Speraw like the earlier buzz was this afternoon then. Seems like either coach wouldn't be too scary in the immediate term that is
