New commit?

For the first 2-3 years, it wouldn't surprise if PR routinely brings in classes with double digit JUCOs, not because he wants to, but because he has to out of necessity. He's said it himself that the team speed and athleticism is not where he wants it to be. Couple that with the fact that 3 and 4 star HS recruits aren't exactly knocking down our door to come play for ISU, and I think the early years of the PR regime are going to have a big JUCO focus, especially on the defensive side of the ball. I'm just using his first class, including the late signees and his public statements as examples. The only positive to this, is that we have a lot of young, talented guys on the roster that have B12 experience that have at least 2-3 years left of elgibility.

If this turns out to be true, it will be imperative that our HS guys develop and turn into solid contributors. The JUCO game is a crapshoot, and if you have some guys that don't pan out, you better have your 4-5 year guys to pick up the slack.

I certainly agree that our recruiting classes are not generally overflowing with star talent. If juco players can come in and contribute right away, I'd have no problem with recruiting a goodly number. However, as CyButDead has pointed out, the juco thing seems to be a bigger crapshoot than recruiting the local kids. Sure, some have been very good, but I've been disappointed so many times about the way most jucos have turned out, I'm tempted to say "let's coach up the h.s. players you've brought in and go where that lleads us." I know it goes against the grain of "winning right now", but honestly, is our program any more likely to get outstanding talent via the juco route as compared to h.s.? The top juco talent is probably looking at programs with better records than ours. Also keep in mind, the jucos are where they are either because of academic problems, or no Div. 1 school wanted them out of high school. Outside of being older, the majority of our juco's don't seem to bring much more to the table than our h.s. kids.
