A year ago, I thought a 12-team playoff would remove all whining - if you can't make it to the top 12, you should've won more games. But here we are a year later, and the powers that be seem to be trying to justify 4 SEC teams, and I find myself whining about who gets in.

After our second bye week, we dropped, I think 2 spots. I am using that as a guide in that all the teams not playing next Saturday will drop 2 spots. The committee will be consistent, right??? (sarcasm)

CFP committee: Hey AP, can I copy your homework?

AP: Yeah just change it up a bit so it doesn't look obvious you copied
In 2020 I felt like the committee was willing to do their own homework and treated ISU fairly. But it's been pretty obvious this season, they are either directly influenced or aren't bothering to look closer than what the media is giving them for evidence.

The AP poll doesn't really mean much but seeing Clemson drop that much is promising. I think ISU has two paths to a 1st round bye now (assuming they win of course):

1) Boise State loses to UNLV
2) SMU loses to Clemson

Neither of those teams would leapfrog ISU as an 11-2 Big 12 champ IMO.

I am cheering for the Clemson scenario because I want Jeanty to go for 300+. Kid deserves the Heisman and is going to get shafted.

I think how the winner of the B12 game vs the MW vs the ACC games look will determine the byes.

SMU - win, bye
Clemson - close win, no bye
Clemson - blowout win, possible bye

ASU/ISU - close win, need a loss by Boise or SMU in close game

Boise - close win, jumped if one of the B12 teams wins big
UNLV - win, in no chance at bye

I guess I have a more jaundiced eye. I really REALLY wanted there to be a hard limit of 3 teams per conference. (Actually I wanted 2 back when the PAC12 was a thing.)

The $EC/B1G/ESPN cabal is becoming all-powerful. They keep eroding away credibility for any actual successes outside the B1G & $EC

Wow! The amount of SEC knob slobbering in this poll is incredible.
It was always going to be that way.

The pro-SEC writers aren't ranking anyone according to any type of actual fair order. They're simply ranking SEC teams as high as possible to try and stack the playoff deck.

Honestly don't know why the SEC doesn't just go down to like 4 conference games with the main rivalry games being the only annual ones and just fill up on FCS teams the rest of the season. If you get highly ranked in the preseason AP poll then you're guaranteed a playoff spot as long as you don't lose 4 games. Who cares if you beat the Maine School for the Deaf and Blind 10 times? This sport is going the way of NASCAR and baseball unfortunately.

According to Sagarin Alabama is 5th. Also if SMU loses Iowa St is deserving of a 10 seed. Colorado really getting jobbed.

Well extending the analogy, it’s pretty clear the playoffs are just like high school. There are certain popular kids who are going to get invited to every party if at all possible. Because they are good looking and pass a lot of eye tests.

Behind them are a group of kids who the popular kids are ok with as long as they don’t try to take over the party. Plus it appeases their parents who said they needed to be nice to more people. But the popular kids don’t want too many of them there. It would ruin the vibe of the party, plus there is only so much pizza and root beer to go around (we are talking high schoolers, and I live in Utah).

Then there are some kids who they will try really hard to keep out. Even though the popular kids’ parents said they had to be nice to everyone, there are some kids who just shouldn’t go to the party. It’s totally cool if they hang out amongst themselves and maybe heat up hot pockets from their mom’s freezer though.

Edit: I just worked through a lot of feelings that have been lingering since high school apparently.

Go Cougs! Iowa State should fly a flag for BYU's assist last night and free Clone Cones for all Cougar fans at next year's game. :)

Do the AP or Coaches poll have any relevance at all at this point? Are they used by the committee? I'm struggling to understand why I should care about the AP ranking.

The AP poll carry’s a ton of weight as far as perception goes. From the Pre-season poll until the first week of the playoff poll the AP is the ranking everyone uses to determine if teams/conferences are “good”. The Big 12 is getting screwed perception wise because Okie St and Utah ended up sucking when they were picked to be the top dogs. BYU. ISU, AZ State are getting no respect for what they did this year. It’s f*cking gross.

The top 20 are almost exactly the same, with just a few variations (and only Ole Miss is more than one spot different). The bottom five are a bit scrambled.

Last week‘s AP poll compared to the CFP committee:

AP …………………………. CFP
1. Oregon ……………….. Oregon
2. Ohio State ………….. Ohio State
3. Texas …………………. Texas
4. Penn State …………. Penn State
5. Notre Dame ………... Notre Dame
6. GEORGIA ……………. MIAMI
7. MIAMI ………………… GEORGIA
8. Tennessee …………. Tennessee
9. SMU ………………….. SMU
10. Indiana …………….. Indiana
11. Boise State ……….. Boise State
12. Clemson …………… Clemson
13. Alabama …………… Alabama
14. S. CAROLINA …….. OLE MISS
15. ARIZONA STATE … S. CAROLINA
16. OLE MISS ………….. ARIZONA STATE
17. IOWA STATE ………. TULANE
18. TULANE ……………. IOWA STATE
19. TEXAS A&M ………. BYU
20. BYU ………………….. TEXAS A&M
21. UNLV ………………… MISSOURI
22. ARMY …….…………. UNLV
23. MEMPHIS ………….. ILLINOIS
24. MISSOURI …………. KANSAS STATE
25. ILLINOIS ……………. COLORADO

UMass ended up with almost as tough of an SEC schedule than Texas played, for Pete’s sake

UMass played at Missouri, at Mississippi State, and at Georgia.

Texas had road games at Vandy, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas A&M (home games against Mississippi State, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky).
