National Anthem

One thing I hate is when people start cheering during the breaks in the song. I don't understand how that started or why and it annoys the hell out of me.

I specifically said that I'm okay with an artist making SOME changes.

But for crying out loud,

^THIS qualifies as making more than a few little tweaks (which is what Houston did). And there are plenty of other performances like this one on record.

That was absolute horse-****. Maybe a little lesson in appreciation is needed for these women. Box them up and send them to Afghanistan, make them marry some worthless dickbag Afghan and do all the chores as the women do. Of course, they have zero rights, so you best not look at any other male let alone show as much as a square inch of skin. All this in the name of appreciation for our National Anthem.

I may be in the minority here, but I wish ISU would have someone sing the anthem before home games. I like that the band plays it, but they do it every time. A little variation never hurt anything. It doesn't even need to be anyone famous/important/relevant, just have one person from the music department do it every once in a while.

I also like the idea of the whole arena singing, and I do at my seat, but unless the PA guy says "everybody sing" or something, it probably won't happen.

I love the idea of everyone in Hilton joining in the anthem, and Cyclone Alley could easily pull this off and have everyone doing it over the course of a couple home games. Just be sure to shout "Clones" at the end, instead of "brave" so that everyone still has something to complain about.

We have living constitution and a living national anthem. It should change with whatever the prevailing vanity fair trends or facebook likes are. I think History will look at all or you who think people should stand with dignity and reverence and contemplation of those who proceeded us as not down with McLemore.

You're going to have to try that again...in English. I have no idea what you are for or against.

The most moving SSB experiences I've been a part of were when everyone was singing. And I can't do that if the lead singer is scooping or yodeling or not gonna bring it home in under 2 minutes.

Maybe a SSB shot clock. At 1:50 you get slapped. At 2:00 you get a kick to the groin.

Remind me to never accept a gig when you're in the audience. Then again, your solution might just help me hit that high C...

The way it's sung absolutely matters. The words are the most important part, yes. But the way we say anything conveys almost, if not just as much, as the words themselves.

When someone absolutely butchers it, that dominates everything else. Because it's an artist putting themselves so far above the spirit of the song that you barely understand what they hell they're saying. They could just as well sing it with auto-tune half the time, for crying out loud.

While I agree with your stance, the post you replied to was correct and a worthwhile point: Key wrote a poem, it was later turned into a song...that used the melody of an english drinking song, no less. If you could sing the song, you were still sober enough to serve...no sing, no drink.

Watching SNL sports show...Maya Rudolph (I think) just performed the National Anthem...and hit on just about every stereotype mentioned in this thread...
Classic!
