Money raising for NIL

Has anyone asked JP about setting up direct basketball and football giving options? Or is he 100% against that?
I don't know that this helps the situation all that much unless it's money donated that would not have otherwise.

Now if you have a legit NIL opportunity, that's a different story.

My understanding is that he wants it all to go to the general fund. My understanding of his reasoning is that ISU currently doesn't have the revenue to cover the $20 million rev share and is dipping into reserves, so really the AD needs that money so it can be distributed equitably among sports.

I think if ISU could cover its deficit, he would be more open to direct donations to FB or MBB. I'm not Jamie so this is just a guess.

Iowa State isn't going to stay in this game and compete with the big boys by having bake sales and shaming poor fans to empty out their pocket change for a new QB....it needs to come from big rich *************. Iowa State doesn't have enough of those. You think Taco Tech is in the playoffs because of the dirt farmers in Lubbock donating $100 a month? It's the billionaire with more money he could spend in 3 lifetimes deciding he wants his alma mater to be better at 18-22(sorry, 27) year old kids running into each other for 3 hours.

I think there are a lot, or at least some, of the old We Will donors that want the ability to control where their donation goes, and don’t want it to go into a pot for every sport. I know I held off donating anything to the We Will fund until recently for that reason, and finally just threw up my hands since I doubt JP will ever change his mind. It was an option that the Collective was willing to offer that the Foundation/AS is not.

Like I said before, if a large donor comes to JP with a large donation for a specific sport he isn't going to turn it down.

And if by chance he does just go over his head to the President of the University. There are ways of getting your mission accomplished if you really want it accomplished.

I wouldn’t consider myself a large donor by any stretch of the imagination, but yeah- a large dollar donor should absolutely go to the University President if they’re getting the run around. I just liked being able to donate to the sports that I’m passionate about.

I mean even though you aren't a large donor if you want you money to go to a specific sport then go over JP's head.

From what I understand JP DID allow this for wrestling. The wrestling boosters offered to donate a mil but it had to go to wrestling. I think that is the reason wrestling is getting that big of a chunk of the rev share. Now that he has the allocations set, I don't think he wants to change them. The sport IMO that will take the biggest hit to start with is WBB - the budget JP is allocating for them ($750K) is less than TCU paid for one player.

Why should ISU be stupid just because TCU is?

This is where its important to differentiate between a "donation" and "NIL." A donation can absolutely be earmarked for a particular sport or project. Think JTS press box, Hilton concourse, wrestling or volleyball practice facilities, etc. If the donor specifies a particular use for that money, the AD has to honor it. But "NIL" is a different type of "donation" that isn't subject to those same rules. Think of it more like a gift card that the AD can use to purchase athletes as it sees fit. It has to be spent at the "athlete store" but you can't tell them what kind of athlete to buy.

And again, there's nothing stopping you from just paying a player directly outside the AD as long as it is <$600 or passes the clearing house. Like Fareway and Audi. Those ads don't have any ISU logos or uniforms or mention the university in any way. The money goes straight to Audi. Just get the Venmo from whatever player you want and pay them.

I understand that doesn't necessarily help with bringing in new talent, which requires coaches' discretion, but it at least helps retain current players.

Who is getting paid that much at TCU? Miles?

Maybe they have big WBB donors, but it would be absolute idiotic for them to allocate that level of support to a single player on the WBB team. That enough for like 3 quality football players. They barley even have 3,000 in average attendance. I can believe they offer more than other schools with oil money, but that much for any WBB player is almost an unconscionably bad use of resources.

Has the foundation advertised the we will fund anywhere? It seems to me that I haven’t heard a single campaign or advertisement from the university about. It seems like I’ve only heard about it from CF and Blum who doesn’t even work on it anymore.

I’ve gone to a handful of basketball games and I don’t think I ever recall a single video message about the wewill fund.

I wonder how much Landus was spending on it?

That’s a whole other box of worms that probably can’t be opened here…but that gravy train is over.
