MJ Anderson declares for the NFL Draft

Both he and Anderson benefited from defenses having to focus on McDonald and Lee.

With only 3 guys rushing much of the time- that isn't quite the same as a 4 man rush. Teams can double 2 guys and still have an OL & TE or RB chip the 3rd ISU DL rusher.

Is he a legitimate draft pick? He barely played at all at Minnesota and has 1 good (not great) year declares for the draft? Good luck, but it seems like a mistake.

He was maybe the best player on one of the best defenses in CFB.

First of all, no. There isn’t a metric where you could quantify him as the best. He was a good piece on a great defense. I would say Freyler, Johnson, Tampa and McDonald all were better this year. Secondly, that literally means nothing to the NFL. It’s all about fit. What position does he translate to in the NFL? Not an EDGE and maybe too small to be a DT. He would be a solid 3-4 end but teams are trending back to 4-3 it seems.

Like I said, good luck to him, but why leave early if you aren’t a for sure day one or 2 guy?

Bummer, but this stuff I was has to start happening eventually if we want to be a top program in the conference.

Is there a situation like basketball where he can remove his name from the draft or is it once he's declared he's gone?

Maybe it isn't fun to be looking down the barrel of another 4 win season despite the defense being good enough to win 8+.

I think that Anderson could translate as a 4-3 strong side DE. 6'3, 275 is a decent size, albeit a little short. McDonald is more of a 4-3 rush end or potentially a 3-4 OLB. He's not going to see many rushing downs at 6'3 240. But he has elite pass rushing skill and that is probably more valuable than anything Anderson can do.

I really thought that Anderson could have used one more year to show he could be the man. But he obviously got some pretty good feedback from the scouts. I hope he makes it, as getting players in the NFL does way more good for ISU than one extra year playing.

A chance and a real chance are 2 different things. Jaquan Bailey probably had an agent in his ear too. Now he works in NASCAR after never playing a snap in the NFL.
Bailey didn't end up getting an NFL roster spot, but he still impressed the Eagles with his performance in training camp. His lack of height made it an uphill battle. Anderson's game and skillset seams similar to Bailey's, but he has the advantage of an inch or two more height. An NFL career is not a sure thing even for early round draft choices, but Anderson should at least get an opportunity to make an impression in training camp.
