Mizzou recruiting up a storm

When Mizzoo lost their OC a couple of years ago (went to WY?) I thought they might take a step back but the guy they promoted into the position has done a good job and recruiting is going well for them. They have always been a sleeping giant and it appears they are now waking up.

You do realize one of our QB commits is an Elite 11 finalist, right? Maty Mauk isn't. He's just in the heart of overhyped big 10 territory. Michigan and ND haven't exactly lit it up in recent years, either.
Rohach had a total of two offers I believe when he committed to us. I am not saying he will not be good, but we were not waiting in line to shake his hand at a camp either.

Um I think that Gary Pinkel and his staff have done pretty well so far coaching up players.

U-could be right bro because mizzou beats us at ISU every year ...the worse being of course danny mac's debacle that cost me a trip to the big 12 championship game !!!

I heard Gabe DeArmond (MU's Rivals guy) on the radio this morning. There is some disappointment in his signing since it signals the kid from Indiana (#1 QB recruit) will play for the Hoosiers. He was down to OU, Alabama, IU and MU. He also said that Mauk is short in QB terms and that kept away some schools.

I will bet you money Gunner Kiel doesn't go to Indiana. I just don't think it will happen. My guess is OK. He may commit early to the Hoosiers but I don't see him ending up there.

Rohach also committed to us on March 14th and is originally from Iowa and loves the state. He also said Washington, Oregon and Boise St. have continued to recruit him. Did I mention he's an Elite 11 finalist and your guy from Ohio isn't?

Alright, you can use your criteria and I will use mine. Are you arguing that as a whole Mizzou's class is worse than ours, because that is ludicrous. Not getting invited to a camp is not mine. Did Mauk even attend a regional event? Not all kids love to go to these things you know. They take a lot of time and your own dollar to go to.

In any of my posts did I say Missouri's class is worse than ours? My argument is that you are hyping a kid based on offers from Michigan and Notre Dame and a slightly higher rivals ranking. I'm saying a kid who makes it to the finals of an elite QB camp, who is being sniffed at by Oregon and Boise St. is nothing to sneeze at. Which programs have had more success lately? I'm sure Mauk is a fine QB, but I'll take Rohach based on everything I've seen and heard about him.

If we landed a kid with Michigan and ND offers the hype around here would be out of control. Hyping a kid of that is no more ridiculous than hyping him because he's in the elite 11.

IU's campus is 30 miles from his home. His brother plays for IU. He's developed a good relationship with their new coach (forgot his name... OU's O-coord who coached Bradford). Grew up a Hoosier fan. They made it sound like IU was the favorite... who knows.

I think they are doing pretty well for their location. Look at the commits for the 2012 class:

Texas A&M- 22
Texas- 18
Texas Tech- 16
Missouri- 12
Baylor- 12
Oklahoma- 10
Oklahoma State- 7
Iowa State- 5
Kansas State- 4
Kansas- 3

They are the only team that's not near a recruiting hotbed that has made a big impact in recruiting so far in the Big XII

Blah. Iowa State has bigger things to worry about right now than who has the better recruiting class in 2012. The best this coaching staff can do is scout talent and try to get the best guys they can find to come to Iowa State in the best way they know how. Who cares how many recruits the Joneses have right now when we all know that by fall camp 2012, every Big XII school will have ~20 scholarship guys coming in to play?

I'm not saying that recruiting isn't important, it's just that I despise the way recruiting is reported. The only things that really matter at all are...

a) What position needs does a team have within the next two years?
b) What are the key skills to be successful at those need positions?
c) What kind of potential prospects exist that have these key skills?
d) How well developed are the key skills of those athletes?
e) At the end of the day, was the team successful in fulfilling those needs?

Anything beyond that is rubbish in my opinion. Position rankings? How do you directly compare a pro style quarterback from Baton Rouge, LA to a spread style QB from Buffalo, NY? The correct answer is that you can't, and anybody who thinks otherwise doesn't understand that there are intricacies to the offenses and defenses of college football. You let coaches determine what they are looking for, do the footwork, and come up with the best players they can find.

We could find who one recruiting website thinks is "the best linebacker of the 2012 class," then find reasons why he could be fantastic at Iowa State and average at Texas A&M. Why? Because linebackers have different tasks in different systems. Then, after we hash that out, we could go to another website, find their top linebacker, and start all over again.

And then there are class rankings. On top of having these different expectations of what each position player is trying to do on the field, they all have different guys graduating at different times from different positions. It would be one thing if class rankings asked, "Who filled their needs with the exact type of athletes they are looking for, and how developed are skills of their recruits?" But that's not the case. Instead, we have these websites grossly oversimplifying the recruiting process into a question of "Who is the best, and what school got them?" Until that changes, I will follow Iowa State's commitments and offer my opinions of them, check in on the other Big XII schools to see what they have coming in on signing day, and that's about it.

Wow, that turned into a rant.

Hi, Mizzou fan here, accidentally by reason of a link. But I thought I would comment on a couple of items mentioned above. MU does not have a commit this year from either of the top two in-state players. Bohem, the o-line recruit is th number 1 to 3rd ranked Guard/Center in the country, depending on which service you look at. Two receivers are rated higher in Missouri as far as the highest rated player. #1, Dorial Green-Beckham is considered the number 1,2 or 3rd best player in the country but has offers from everyone. The number 2 player, Durron Neal has committed to OU.

But the Tigers are having a very good start, now up to 14 players. ESPN says 6 are 4 Star,Rivals says only 2 (Bohem and the running back, Williams.) Rivals bumps some players later in the season so who knows.

I was trying to find out if the new QB, Maty Mauk, had even tried for the elite 11. My search took me here. But I have not learned anything. MU has had three such players in the last 7 or so years. Mauk was not, neither is Franklin, next year's starter. THe writer above noted not all players try for it...that is true. Mauk is getting attention because he will may well end up with the all time High School yardage record and or td record. (his older brother was up there too.) The HS coach is is dad and they do not even have a running back in their standard formation. And the offense has some things in common to MU's (as did Chase Daniels' H school. He may not even be the 6' 1" reported, which lowers his rating. Rivals gives him 5.7 at this point, 5.8 is the 4 star minimum. I believe Franklin was a 4 star and Little Gabbert (who has now left the program.)

Last year's recruiting class was not real impressive, based on the ratings. The only 4 star was Richardson, the DT, who could be great, but who may or may not show up as eligible and talks like he wants to be one and done (went to JC due to grades.) That class was very small, only 17 due to the scholarship limits. THis year MU can take a more normal size class.

Think you guys have a good coach and I think he will recruit better than Chezik. I love your new Basketball coach and the best thing is, he will be very unlikely to leave on his own.

Good luck versus the "south teams", Iowa, and especially vs KU (not that you should need it vs KU."

I totally agree. Being an Elite 11 finalist is equivalent to signing that signing bonus check before throwing a college ball.

Best Wishes

Jake The Snake Christiansen.

P.S. - Dad says tell his buddy Miller hi for him.
