Milwaukee Mcdermott sighting

"Out coached" is the wrong term. McDermot is visibly a good XOs coach, and has a brilliant basketball mind. Ben Jacobs is his mentoree, and has a similar way of coaching. I think you could make the argument that UNI has had teams that play better then ISUs the past few years, and an easier schedule, but not out coached. Out played, but not outcoached.

Either way, I think ISU is back on top in the state.

I know there is more to wins and losses but his track record here isn't showing a whole lot of him out coaching other teams.

Generally I think a lot of these losses are due to a non uptempo type of play. Just how I feel about it. From my perspective it seems like a lot of games I went to were in the 50- low 60 point areas.

I'm really just giving you a hard time, because I hate the out coached argument. I guarantee you 99.999% of people on this board could not tell me what the game plan of any game was going in. On top of that...I know we have had trouble with the execution part of the game plan.

He's outcoached a few people to keep us in games, we just don't have the horses. He can't put the buckets in, he can only try to get us open looks. OU we played down to the wire. Kansas we played with until we decided to forget how to score. Playing up-tempo the last two season would've been a HUGE mistake. DG is too wild with the ball, and Petey's high-flying antics wouldn't be able to handle the ball up-tempo. This doesn't even account for having other people to go with them. Brackins is about the only guy we've got that would be able to run the floor to go up-tempo without sacrificing a lot.

Just say that if he has a similar year to last year though, do you think he'll be able to keep his job by outcoaching a few people to keep us in games?

I'm not talking about always running the ball up and down the court, to me it just seems like there isnt a lot of energy sometimes going thru the motions during our games.

Yep, because the execution will be there. Hopefully. Our upgrade in athleticism should help cover up some of our mistakes.

I just hate rehashing the struggles of the prior McD years. We all know they sucked. We have a good team to look forward to this year and IMO that is vastly more interesting than trying to decide if McD got outcoached in the UNI game last year (which is a game that was won on the road against a better team.)

I know you are just giving me a hard time. I can still be a loyal ISU alum and fan though and give my honest opinion. It's tough to dig on McD because I think he's a great, great guy. I just question the decisions made during games, some plays and styles we run, and hoping for improvement. I know we have some great people coming onto the team, I'm just looking at his 3 years here, and trying to give my opinion on a a record of 44-50. I can be optimistic too for this year and I will be but I wont let it cloud my own opinion.

Minimal road wins
0-3 vs Drake
1-2 vs Iowa
1-2 vs UNI
losing to teams like SD State, Hawaii, etc.
There isn't a whole lot of shocking wins in his tenure is there?

Dude, there was a time and place to be negative or question the direction of this program but today is not the day. We should all be excited about the upcoming season and the talent we have coming back. Why rehash all this crap? If we suck again next year I'll be right there with ya but until then why not be excited and hopefull Gmac gets it done in 09'/10'? If you can't feel the momentum changing in this program then it would be hard for anyone to respect your opinion.

I guess all I'm saying is everyone should lighten up on the past...it is what it is...and if we don't right the ship this year you will have plenty of people on your side anyway. Why not sit back, relax and cheer on your ball coach?

I thought forums are for discussing the past? I'm only rehashing the past because people asked me to back up my opinion and I gave my responses. They wouldn't be on there if people didn't ask.

I am lightened up about the past as I am still supporting ISU, but I am also able to point out my opinion too.

I probably have a luxury of asking these questions after I'm ****** that we lost...FWIW, I've never caught him off guard with a: Why didn't you do this question. Mac always has reasons for his decisions and they are always better than what I would have done if it was my decision knowing what he knows. I've sat down in film sessions; they see things most do not.

McD is a very good coach, he has coached brackins to a first team All Big 12 selection already. He is also very good at X and O's. Hes just had a mess of players leaving. I am really looking forward to this season and I really like Mcdermott.

We will run more uptempo especially now that we have more athletic players who are capable of running it. When your a good coach like Mcdermott you use what you got and to give us the best chance of winning last year he had to slow it down. Its not rocket science is coaching 101

I think his thought was along the lines of it does not need to be posted in a thread about spotting McD in Milwaukee. Maybe the McD do or die thread is more what you are looking for.

Yes, but I'm answering questions and giving my response to other people's posts.

I don't have a problem with discussing the past per say...it was just the tone for me. I just see the future as bright and the momentum really starting to change so I prefer to look on that side of things.

The guys I play pick-up ball with, college players and ex-players (some ISU) shake their heads at our lack of fundamentals. For example, why can't half of our players, including guards, dribble under pressure?

I absolutely 100% agree. But when someone asks my, why do you think that, I will give my opinion, even if its unpopular. I will still go to the games, even if they are going thru a rough time, etc. I'm there and will still be there even if I think we can play or be coached better.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall for one of these sometime. I wonder sometimes what goes in the film sessions, how they do scouting reports, etc.

I would too, I would think that you would have to get quite a few teams for film footage for one team due to different defenses, etc. I'm sure its many a late nights for going thru an average of all of those teams and different styles.

My guess...foot speed; could not go by anybody. You're also talking about true freshmen and sophmore guards playing the whole game because of lack of depth.

I could sit there for hours on end...
I can sit and watch film and edit film for hours on end. I'd love to have the time to be a video editor for the athletics department in some capacity but it doesn't pay well enough.
