Microsoft reported close to buying Skype - Business - US business - msnbc.com

Microsoft Corp. is close to buying web video conferencing service Skype Technologies in an $8.5 billion deal that would rank as the biggest ever for the software company, sources familiar with the situation said Monday.

All Things Digital, a website run by The Wall Street Journal, reported that the deal already has been completed and would be announced early Tuesday. Reuters, citing a source familiar with the situation, also said the deal could be announced as early as Tuesday.

Just thought it was interesting given how much I use Skype and a crap load of money changing hands.

With office365 just around the corner and microsoft lync, this makes perfect sense. Team that up with their polycom deal and now microsoft owns 100% of desktop video conferencing.

This deal makes a lot of sense and looks like Microsoft slowly working their way to cornering the residential VoIP market. I can see this service being ideal for home desktop, tablet and smart phone use; however, the reliability in a large business/corporate environment is suspect.

Cisco purchased Polycom's rival (Tandberg) awhile ago. Tandberg is based out of the UK and is most famous for their Telepresence systems, HD conferencing and, IMO, being "flashier" than Polycom. My company is a dealer of both systems, and while I prefer Polycom for their cost, ease of set-up, and user friendliness, Tandberg is on the cutting edge of HD "face-to-face" conferencing.
