Michigan hires Wittingham

A guy who's done it for 21 years has no need of money. Maybe the current landscape sickens him and he just wants out. Maybe there is more to it.

Last year I heard credible rumors that CMC was seriously considering leaving football all together and retiring. The same source that let me know he was taking the PSU job and that the PSU AD was meeting him at his his house before there were any rumblings on line about either. So I believe this sourced. I'm guessing Matt decided he wasn't done, so he needed to go all in rather than quit.

I could see that honestly. I’m sure it’s hard, especially when you lose guys to injuries that could have put you over the top & struggle to get the players you think you need to win.

I 100% believe we won the lottery here. Almost as much as when Chizik left for AU. Rogers is a young, focused guy who wants to be in the Midwest. I think Ames represents his P4 version of SDST dream (from reports of him wanting this or Iowa). There aren’t any other P4 U’s in the Midwest that fit that bill.

He’s dedicated and driven. Got a solid staff and seems like a real FB ‘guy’.

I also think we’d have seen MC struggle without Heacock.

This can't be stressed enough in my opinion.

We're all waiting with bated breath and Cyclone jock straps.

We have a coach stepping off the elevator onto a higher floor than any of the coaches before him, so it's reasonable to hope we keep progressing. What it comes down to is having the support around the program necessary to allow JR to build.

I'm hopeful that a new president with the right perspective and a wake-up call for Pollard make for a successful reboot.

That said, next season is going to suuuuuuuuuck.

So by suck are you thinking sub .500?
I'm hoping for .500 or maybe a game above.
No reasoning behind this just hope.

These guys must just love coaching. Whittingham is 66 years old and had a ~$7M salary last year. I assume he doesn't need the money anymore.

If I had to guess, with all the issues that Michigan has had with their coaches, they probably just need someone to right the ship and possibly groom their next coach.

Also to add, Whittingham probably sees this as a last hurrah to possibly win a national championship with the resource that Michigan has.

They needed someone who will grab control of the program and get it one track. If he hire a couple good coordinators and a GM his job isn’t that hard there.

They got their Michigan Man, a Mormon who's never coached east of the rockies.

In all seriousness, a good hire but he's walking into a mess of an AD and by most accounts overall university leadership situation.

He's already hired Utah's OC and looks like he's going to take the entire offensive staff and a couple guys on defense.

Maybe don't force him out...

Did they force him out, or did he leave because he didn't like the direction the AD was going due to the private equity deal they signed?

Honestly about as good as Michigan could hope for. Should be able to keep the program competitive and will be done in a couple years and they can move on. They were staring down a total mess and Whittingham is a proven guy
