They owned the Big XII for the 2 seasons they were here. His work is done.

Come on, guys. That was pretty obvious sarcasm. Their fans said they would come in and own the Big 12 from day 1, and they struggled mightily.
This has to be somewhat related to that whole private equity deal, right? He probably didn't want to deal with all that non-sense.
I thought he came out and said he was open to other opportunities, not retiring, just done with UU.
The first line is true for no one but him. Oof. Can't wait to see what starts leaking out around the edges of this move. Feel like the PE angle has probably been identified correctly.
A guy who's done it for 21 years has no need of money. Maybe the current landscape sickens him and he just wants out. Maybe there is more to it.
Last year I heard credible rumors that CMC was seriously considering leaving football all together and retiring. The same source that let me know he was taking the PSU job and that the PSU AD was meeting him at his his house before there were any rumblings on line about either. So I believe this sourced. I'm guessing Matt decided he wasn't done, so he needed to go all in rather than quit.
My friends and i all said at the same time, he didn't say retired. He just said he is stepping down. Is he putting himself in for the Michigan job and if they say no, he just takes the next year off type of deal?
He's earned the right to do what he wants. If it is the PE deal if would be pretty ironic that the quest for more money cost them a coach that's made enough money not to care about the new money. The timing is never right for everyone, just sucks to be a recruit that just signed only to have the coach leave a week later.
As crazy as things are in sports now, I believe PE is just going to make everything worse. I'm pretty sure it won't be long before I'm priced out of it.
Didn’t he have a head coach in waiting? Doing it this late pretty much forces the university to put him in or take a huge gamble that didn’t get decent coaches now.
Not really a surprise that his name would come up, and obviously it's all speculation at this point...

Sources: U-M targeting Utes legend Whittingham
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has emerged as the focus of Michigan's coaching search, sources told ESPN.
I got the sense that he was kind of pushed out because they had the coach-in-waiting and people were wanting to make the transition to the new coach.
Maybe not exactly accurate to say “pushed out” but it seems like he was getting the message that people were antsy to get started on the new coach and he didn’t like feeling like he was a burden or wasn’t really appreciated anymore.
