Merged Covid Megathread

Our youngest child's daycare is not mask mandating the children but after the latest governor proclamation along with recommendations by DHS and the State Health Department who are strongly encouraging kids age 3 years and older wear masks we sent our 3.5 year old with a mask on today. My wife made a comment that it will be interesting to see if the mask possibly helps out with not getting all the other crap that you usually goes around daycare too around this time of the year like the colds, coughs, runny noses, viral bugs/flus etc that daycare centers are known germ factories for.

I'm tired of the mask debates and if they are effective or not. I would rather wear one and eventually be proven wrong that they aren't effective at all than to be careless and not wear one and possibly add to the mess we already are in with this pandemic. I already had 1 exposure this summer to covid that I'm pretty sure the social distancing and mask wearing our group of 10 did probably saved us from getting it too. One of the guys in the group was a healthy and fit guy that had no symptoms of covid at the time and just days later started to develop some mild symptoms and tested positive. My initial reaction was shock then I started to replay in my mind if I had possibly come into any incidental contact with him or anything he may have handled or touched. Whatever we have all been doing up until this point it is becoming obvious that some need to take things more seriously to help get the numbers down. People who have other medical conditions or emergencies are going to also be at risk of not getting prompt health care if we don't.

So are you guys going with Moderna, Pfizer or Sputnik? I'm waiting until we get a vaccine cocktail and take all three at once.

I thought this was an interesting compilation of statistics that you rarely see all in one place.

Imo WI has had a very good testing program and as these cases have surged recently, the mortality rate has dropped to about .85% by deaths/confirmed cases.

Deaths have still gone up with infections, and hospitalizations as well.

Well, don't forget about the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, as it is just behind the others. The response to this pandemic in terms of the number of tests, therapeutics, and vaccines developed in the short time frame since we've known about Covid-19 has been incredible!

That one was paused for quit a bit in the US I thought so I assume it's lagging behind. If they get authorization I'll definitely add it to my cocktail.

I finally opted out of the cave today because some of the topics and way people are talking and treating each other there lately just disgusts me. Not even a full day in without seeing the cave posts already is refreshing to see there are still some people around capable of being decent human beings and not posting garbage like that.

Your days will be sunnier, filled with happier and happier thoughts as time goes by... Well done!

I can quibble about dueling mask studies, but end of day, I'm not qualified to make that call AND masks are no big deal. And if it helps the broader public feel safer than that's a win. I think it's mostly optics personally, but we have a mandate here in CO and I've usually been a rule follower.

Interesting that the study was conducted in April and May, 2020 and is just now getting published today. Wonder what took them so long to get it published?
Danish mask controlled trial finally published. I believe it's the largest randomized controlled trial of mask use in the world?

It’s not a controlled trial of mask use.

It’s a controlled trial of ‘recommending’ that people use masks.

And the recommendation was given in the midst of a global pandemic where many other mitigation efforts (including social distancing) were ongoing.

So it is completely inappropriate to conclude from this study that wearing a mask, with all else being equal, yields no protection from catching the virus. Furthermore, I don’t see that the authors even measured mask use among participants? So there’s no evidence that the ‘mask recommendation’ group actually used a mask more frequently than the control group, correct?

Do you agree?

Question: Could the mRNA vaccines such as the ones by Pfizer and Moderna turn out to be therapeutic as well as preventative for COVID-19? Been doing a little studying on it and what info that I've found is pretty unclear to me. I haven't run across any sources yet that say that they definitely could be therapeutic, but I need to study it deeper.
