Merged Covid Megathread

When I was working and had to report on multiple projects I always liked to start out with a one page summary. I've never seen this Covid-19 Tracker one page summary before and think it is pretty informative. It is from First Trust. From their website, " First Trust Portfolios L.P. and its affiliate First Trust Advisors L.P. (collectively “First Trust”) were established in 1991 with a mission to offer trusted investment products and advisory services. " Anyway here's the one page summary as of October 7th.

From the "we're not safe until everyone is safe" file, J&J to provide 500M vaccines to poor countries. Only about 6.3% of the world's population but encouraging that many companies are doing this. I wonder who will cross the finish line first and whether the other companies will still proceed and offer their own vaccines too. Interesting times ahead for sure.

CDC Weekly Summary for October 9th

Nationally, the percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, decreased from 5.2% during week 39 to 4.9% during week 40.

It really is amazing. The public really needs to be demanding a Covid test if there is even the hint of not feeling well. Seems like basic stuff for when you’re in the middle of a pandemic, but what do I know?

The nurse then walked out the room and she heard her say "We need to get her an ambulance now". The ambulance came and they immediately put her in the ICU. She thought for sure she was going to die and her husband and kids could not see her. She ended up being released 5 days later and seems to be recovering now. Her husband and her college daughter have also tested positive and their teenage son has not.
Seems like a lot bigger deal when it happens to someone you know. It also makes my "I really miss eating out" seem very trivial.

Had a 53 year old acquaintance die of Covid. Only met her a few times, friends with her cousin. No known health issues, not overweight. She sent her daughter to stay with her ex while she isolated, and was probably slow to tell them she was going way downhill in about a six hour span. Able to call for help but died in the ambulance.

I am nearly seven years older and asthmatic. I don’t need to do much but grab groceries and walk the dog. Every time I am around people smirking maskless in stores that require them, I decide I don’t miss being around strangers. I think that the skyrocketing hospitalization rates that have not dramatically increased deaths just reflect at risk people like me withdrawing from society.

Impactful story and if it plays out 360,000,000 times in this country we're screwed. My MIL was very sick for more than a few weeks but tests came back negative. My nephew (a nurse) and his whole family (wife, 2 kiddos) also became sick and all tested positive. All made complete recoveries. My Dad is 90 with advanced pulmonary fibrosis and if he gets it he's toast.

Covid is a big deal like childhood cancer is a big deal and texting and driving is a big deal and rampant obesity is a big deal.

Hopefully I can’t catch childhood cancer or rampant obesity from the morbidly obese maskless wonder who had to brush up next to me while I was grabbing a gallon of milk while screaming at his wife about how stupid she is. He might run me down while texting and driving however.

My anecdotal evidence is the people most belligerent about harassing workers because they want to shop at stores without a mask when the requirement is clearly posted is that they are usually overweight like this woman. Do they not realize this is a risk factor?

NOT getting covid is easy. Stay inside and wear a mask. Completely in your control. You can't do a dang thing about the maskless other than do your own little lock down... Every government body and health org is in agreement - to not get sick, stay at home, stay away from other people.

Which is why these employees and businesses that are open are good to reject people, right? Dude's not getting paid if he's not at work.

I've posted before but there's evidence of a strong correlation between obesity and worsening brain function.

I was up north this weekend where some spots are seeing massive upticks in hospitalizations, and the bars and restaurants were still hopping.

I'm really glad I like camping.
