And that was the beginning of the end for him. He held onto his staff for a long time…once turnover started things went downhill.
He was just fine until he got sick and then people started using that to recruit against him. He held on about 3 years longer than he should have and left the cupboard empty.

His staff his last year was still pretty great:
Don Patterson (HC at Western Illinois the last time they were relevent)
Bob Elliott (Would have been an HC without the illness)
Chuck Long
Bret Bilema
Bill Ennis-Inge

None of that changes the fact he was an absolute ******* for the entirety of the time he was at Iowa.

Here's the thing about ol' Raisin Face. He came out of Texas and always had to compete for talent with bigger schools. He was as serious as a heart attack about dominating Iowa State so that he never had to worry about that, and all the developmental path kids would beat a path to his door.

Iowa to Notre Dame as a lateral move is a hell of a thing!

TJ has already passed Matty boy just because he is the greatest basketball coach in school history, and he is still coaching at Iowa State University. Matty boy won football games not championships or playoffs. Greatness needs to be met with Championships (conference or Nattys).

Must have missed when TJ won championships.

TJ won the Big 12 Tourney in 2024, if that counts.

Also the uncrowned king of the inaugural Players Era Festival.

The post I replied to said championships as in plural. He’s won one.

I don’t want TJ to ever leave by the way, I was merely questioning the said poster’s definition of greatness.

Its the year 2040 and ISU is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Fiesta Bowl team/win. CMC after having a solid but not spectacular career at PSU is introduced to the crowd on the jumbotron.

Considering CMC left ISU in a nearly historic shambles having taken nearly 20 of its players with him including its QB and future QB, what is his reception?
I was thinking about this the other day, if he came back in the next few years it would probably be solid boos but if Rogers is able to rebuild and have solid football I could see us welcoming him back if there was some type of reunion. If football falls into mediocrity then I’m not sure when he’d be welcome back.

Dan Devine left Missouri for Notre Dame after the 1970 season. Then left Notre Dame for Green Bay. He returned to Missouri as AD in the 90's for a couple years. The indoor practice facility is named the Devine pavilion.

I was at a game when he was introduced at halftime and he was warmly received on the alumni side but I'm not sure the students knew who he was or particularly cared. Missouri was a powerhouse under Devine in the 60's but he did not build a sustainable winning program. ISU has the advantage of the state of the art workout facility and one of the largest stadiums in the conference which should keep the program stable. Unfortunately I suspect we have the disadvantage of not as much NIL money as other schools.

Regarding Campbell I don't hold it against him for leaving for Penn State but I'd give him the golf clap if he decided to return. You want to leave? Leave. Goodbye. Don't expect a parade when you return.

I personally don't mind Matt leaving, especially for a job like Penn State. My problem, as is the problem with many (and the reason he wouldn't get a warm reception from me) is that he actively gutted the program on the way out. Taking 20 of our best players including our QB and QB of the future...that simply can't be forgiven. I'm not booing the man now or later but he will never be cheered by me due to his actions AFTER leaving ISU.

I doubt Devine took 20 of Mizzou's best players with him to Notre Dame...

That's a valid point. I retract my statement. He should stay away.

Those players committed to Matt Campbell. They weren't sticking around anyway. Consider the era we are in also. Rarely do players commit to programs. If it was as easy to transfer in old days the way it is now the same thing would have happened them.
