Reading a couple threads today had this on my mind, so I wanted to hear what others have thought of too.

Something that has been on my mind since I heard the story about the Van Meter Visitor, is that how that school completely missed the mark when naming their mascot. I actually was shocked that the High School was not known as the Van Meter Visitors, and thought that would be a perfect fit and really fun name for them.

And since then I sometimes have noticed situations other places where they either have used a mascot that was perfect for the town/location, and others that have been a total miss.

We all know how Iowa State got the Cyclone name, we all know how Cy became the mascot, mostly I think it fits perfectly, at least it has a fitting story behind it.

Does anyone else have any schools or colleges that have missed the mark or have picked a perfect mascot because of a historical story.

Here are some of the ones I have thought of.... maybe not P.C. enough for today though.

Van Meter, Visitors
Villisca, Murderers
Independence, Lunatics
New Mexico State, Aliens
University of Iowa, Jackasses

So their scoreboard have read visitors and visitors?

So their scoreboard have read visitors and visitors?
I mean, yeah maybe. :D

I think there are other ways of doing that though, even some fun plays on that too.

Visitors and Everyone else
Home, Away etc.

But yeah that would be a fun issue to deal with too.

Marion HS (next to CR) was the Indians forever. Several years ago they decided to change. At first they chose the Mavericks, but bungled that somehow, and abandoned it. Then they landed on the Wolves. The Marion Wolves.

The city of Marion is named for Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War hero. If you've ever seen the movie The Patriot, Mel Gibson's character Benjamin Martin was fictional but supposedly based on Francis Marion. Marion introduced guerilla type military tactics to the Colonials, believing standing line-to-line with the Redcoats was a stupid way to fight. His tactics were very effective, and he was given the nickname the Swamp Fox. Every year Marion puts on the Swamp Fox Festival in town in his honor.

I know for a fact the Swamp Fox was suggested as a name/mascot to the Marion board to replace Indians. It would've been unique, historically meaningful, and pretty f*cking cool. So of course, they said no, and landed on the Wolves. Having grown up in CR/Marion I can tell you the only wolves I ever saw were the ones at Bever Park Zoo.

Stupid nickname and a huge miss IMO.

Rhinelander High School in Wisconsin uses the local legend Hodag as their mascot, which I always thought was pretty cool.

I-35 High School used to be the "Travelers" and their mascot was a suitcase with wings. Now they are the Roadrunners which is lame.

I like the Sheldon Orabs. Their nickname is from their colors, ORange And Black.

Not sure what their mascot would look like. Afraid my portrait would be of somebody wearing an orange burnoose.

If they refused Swamp Fox, they could have at least considered Patriots, Marion Minutemen, something along that line.

Northern WI has some pretty cool mascots scattered throughout.

Bears, Oredockers, and a few others.

Also Watersmeet MI (U.P.): Home of the Nimrods.
Knowing that a Nimrod is a Norse God, I am good with that mascot.

Colfax Tigers consolidated with the Mingo Mohawks and became the Tigerhawks and came up with a variant of the Iowa logo. I'll give them this, at least the logo actually looks like a hawk and not a chicken.

I’m originally from Panora which has Lake Panorama. When Panora-Linden merged with YJB they chose the Panthers (not a terrible mascot), but I think the Lakers would have been cooler.

Mavericks got cancelled.

A maverick is someone that does things their own way. Named after a real guy named Maverick that didnt brand his cattle, thus did it his own way. But apparently the real guy owned slaves so... some people protested and they dropped it and went for wolves.

The St. Ansgar Saints took on Martensdale St Mary's for the class 1a baseball title. Neither is a private school. The bonus is St. Marys mascot is the blue devils.

Swamp Foxes was a no brainer. I don’t know why the Marion district ignored that.

Ditching Mavericks was dumb. Somebody brought up the fact that Samuel Maverick was a slave owner … well, guess what, 99.9% of people (including me) had zero idea that mavericks, the wild headstrong horses that can’t be tamed, were named after some guy.

There was zero chance of the Marion Mavericks being tagged as honoring some slave owner until some tight-ass brought it up to the school district.

(I don’t have a strong preference, Wolves is okay, Marion Mavericks just sounds better because it’s alliterative - and the reason it got shot down was just silly. It’s not like they were using Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson as the mascot - like I said, nobody even realized the word “Maverick” came from a man’s name, and thereby nobody would consider the word to be related to slavery in any way, instead it would have had the meaning of “independent” “fierce” “untameable” that everybody thinks of when they hear “Maverick.” Heck, I guess that last Top Gun movie oughta be canceled - Tom Cruise’s callsign honors slaveowners, who knew? I guess it serves the district right for dismissing the obvious winner of Swamp Foxes out of hand.)
