(Non-Spoiler Review) So, I finally got to and finished Agents of Shield Season 6 on Netflix, so here goes on my usual review I do for everything MCU related. Overall, I really enjoyed this season, but didn't love it. I've been very vocal on here about my affection for AOS and really especially loved the past couple seasons, so with that, I thought this season ended up taking a bit of a step backwards. The script, characters, and storytelling was all overall pretty solid, but I can't say it had the emotional wham and flare the previous two seasons had.
Also, there was a couple big cosmetic details which really bugged me throughout, which I'm not quite sure I ever got over. For one, this was really the first major season which pretty much completely ignored what was going on in the rest of the MCU. There was literally zero tie-ins to Endgame, which is especially strange considering the previous season tied directly into Infinity War. While one can make a shaky argument that S6 really exists in a now separate timeline due to the time travel of S5, even that is chalk full of holes. I'm a canon junkie. I'll admit that, so the wonkiness, lack of communication, and drifting apart between Marvel TV and Marvel Studios just plain bothers me. Secondly, the last big ringing noise in my ear throughout the series I couldn't shake was how fast and loose AOS in general is starting to play with both time travel and galaxy travel/teleportation devices. There has been enough history in the MCU for both of these things to establish some pretty solid galaxy-wide ground rules, and AOS has been playing so fast and loose with both, to the point where they they are turning into plot devices for the show to make them do whatever they want to fit into their story at the time. The Arrowverse is the absolute worst with this, and I'd hate to see the MCU become the same. At its core, this is another canon problem. The faster and looser you play with stuff like this, the more future plot holes you create when pretty much anything feels possible at any time. Then, when everything is possible, you lose your depth and weight to anything. It really is a big problem.
With all that said, Agents of Shield Season 6 is still a pretty decent series worth checking out, as long as you can handle the super annoying ringing of the two big items listed above. Maybe they will explain both away in future season, maybe not.
Next up, I'm moving on to the new Dark Crystal series on Netflix, which means I'll have a short hiatus from Superhero content. However, after that, I FINALLY plan on getting around to Jessica Jones S3, which is way overdue. Look for me to also follow-up this review soon with my updated MCU and Superhero TV rankings to include AOS S6.
For those of you who have already seen AOS S6, please chime in with your thoughts. I'd love to hear them.
