Marathon Runners Thread

This was the first year I've tracked my training based on heart rate opposed to time. I used pace as the constant and HR as the variable - so much more enjoyable than the last 10 years where I just tried to beat my previous pace every single run. I'm not a "good" runner by any means but this was the biggest change for me.

I was showing a veteran runner my running app stats and she was shocked my average HR for previous years was always in the 180+ range. So thankful for that direction
Always nice to learn from more experienced runners, I've learned a ton from better runners.

I've found the most accurate predictor on my running capabilities and general cardio health is my VO2max. Fun to track.

trying to keep majority of my runs under the calculation of:
180 HR minus my age (33) = 147 max HR

has helped my training so much. forced me to slow down alot but ive seen gains on workout day and in my overall health

I’m running 26.2 next weekend - can’t wait.

I’ve also focused on keeping my heart rate down (besides intentional speed workout days) and I’ve been shocked at how much more fresh I feel. I’ve added more miles to my training than ever before but keeping my speed and heart rate down has been a life saver. VO2 max is also higher than it’s ever been.

26.2 for me
excited to see the new course layout
BQ is goal
I'll be doing the 26.2.
You'll be a head of me. I too am looking forward to the new course, Southside hills are gone!

Water works usually breaks me mentally, hoping to gut it out.

I'm 34 and I honestly don't think I could jog 2 miles and keep it at 147 HR even at like a 1030-11 pace. Mine jumps to about 155 immediately and then just slowly creeps up.

If I’m reading the course map right, is there a 180 turnaround between mile 25 & 26? I remember last year one of those by Gray’s lake and that was rough. I’m not running it this year, but considering running it next year! Really interested to hear how people like the new layout.

Waterworks that stage in the race is so tough. Totally exposed and minimal fan support. Only saving grace is it’s totally flat.

The last few miles seem a little herky jerky, imo

I ran/jogged for 43 years. Best marathon time was 3:10 in freezing rain and snow. Free advice - exercise your glutes. I had to stop jogging because of gluteal tendinopathy. Now I'm swimming which isn't nearly as enjoyable as jogging but it eliminates the pain and is some cardio.

Pain management doctor diagnosed me as soon as I told him I was a long time jogger.

I've signed up for my first marathon next June in 2026 in Cedar Rapids.
I'm using the Hal Higdon guide for training.

I've run several 5Ks this year, and even ran Relay Iowa this past June. Relay Iowa is a 339 mile run relay style across the state. Our team ran it in 2 mile stints, with 4 hour rotations. I ended up running 41 miles in the 3 day period.
My big concern at the moment is figuring out energy management.

That is who I use usually as well. Tried more speedwork and didn't do as well with it. So back to Higdon for this one.

Just need to find something that doesn't upset your stomach. Plenty of options out there! I use untapped maple syrup. And make sure your training pace is slow! Should be a minute or so slower than your marathon pace.

I did half dozen marathons in my 20's and 30's, all just over 3:00 (3:02:37 was my best). I could never break that damn 3:00 mark.

Any prior Chicago Marathon runners in here? Wife is running it this weekend. Expecting it to be a fun time but a total zoo trying to spot her along the course!

We're both running the Madison Marathon in early November, so I'll be just fine being the spectator this weekend.

You can make it from Chinatown to mile 25 to cheer her on if you hurry
