Black bears will run from a dog or even humans yelling at them. Grizzlies are a different story but running isn't gonna save you. Your better of trying to make yourself as tall as possible (coat above head scenario) and intimidating them. If it's a mother with cubs, you're ******. Having said that grizzlies avoid humans at almost all costs.

As a man, I'd prefer to meet a man, but feel like black/grizzly would change things if I was a woman.

I did meet a moose and her calf in the wild on Labor Day weekend two years ago, and it was a lot more pleasant encounter than people said it would be.
