Interesting. I know we are planning to recruit the state of Illinois pretty hard.....since things at the university of Illinois have been a total train wreak. Their athletic department is quite messed up....but this might be a good move. Hard to say. The Chicago trib writer blasted the hire, kind of hope he is right, for our sake. Interesting, in that article, he talks about having to compete with Ohio state, Michigan and Michigan state........none of which are in the b10 west. Just shows they know how weak the b10 west is.

Interesting indeed. I wish the Illini luck; no way they should be consistently bad. I watched the presser and Lovie just doesn't seem to be the college coach type.

I don't think it matters who Illinois hires as their coach, the best players in Chicago will always to go Notre Dame or Michigan. This is coming from a mild Illini fan whose dad and sister both went to Illinois.

Lovie Smith, everyone's favorite football coach to fire, is now coaching at a school where they've had five different head coaches the past five years.

I honestly had to look up if Lovie had any college coaching experience.

Looks like he was an itinerant positional assistant (DB, LB) through SEC, Big Ten, and Pac-10 schools for a long time before signing on as the Buc's linebackers coach.

Became a "rising star" there to take over the Rams' defense and then da Bears.

You would have to wonder what kind of recruiter he was back in the day... in the early 1990s... and what kind of staff he is going to have, and if he can tap into the Bears fans in Chicago.

But, yeah, not exactly loving this one.

Yes. Michigan, MSU, and Ohio State not being in the B1G West is totally the reason a coach needs to be concerned about recruiting against Michigan, MSU and Ohio State. Nailed it.

On the surface, seems like a big time hire. In reality, Illinois fans will be asking for a new coach in 3 or 4 years.

It's a lazy hire. If I were an Illini fan I'd be screaming for the AD to be fired.

Good luck, hearing the same canned phrases after every loss.

This is true in part because there are zero Illinois fans in Chicago. I lived there 15 years and met 2 NW fans and 1 Illinois fan the entire time. This compared to probably at least a dozen from every bordering B12 school.

If you're born in Chicago you're a Bears fan and a fan of whatever non-Illinois/NW school your parents went to.
