Love For Tre Jackson!

As president of the Tre Jackson fan club, we have been having weekly meetings on the discord server. Membership is ripe for a big increase this season. We are currently running a promotion of 100% off the regular membership fee.

It's fun to see Tre, Caleb, and Jaz enter the game as extremely reliable bench guys. I look forward to seeing what they're going to bring to the game with their energy and pace. Their skill sets really compliments the starters.

You know you have quality depth when one of your senior leaders (Kalscheur) gets limited minutes due to how good the bench guys are playing on the road.

Might be sacrilegious, but I think the best lineup right now is...

Hunter
Grill
Brockington
Kunc
Conditt

Hunter is as good as advertised. Grill is shooting 46.7% from three and Gabe is 25.6%. I'm fine with the current lineup with Grill off the bench, but Kalscheur has lived up to his streaky reputation.

Kunc might be the best player on the team. Conditt has found a new gear this season.

I think Kalscheur starts due to his defense and overall game, even though he can be streaky. TJ has definitely shown that he's more than willing to adjust the minutes based on what he is seeing on the floor though.

He is playing great and I think that should be acknowledged. He is a steadying influence out there on the floor, plays good d, and seems to step up in moments where the team needs it. Hunter was struggling for a bit yesterday and he came in and steadied the ship. Love him, he stayed with program while everybody else left. He has bought in and is playing a great role for our team.
No one deserves a great season more than him and Conditt.

I love Kunc's game, but how do you figure? Curious as to your thought process.

He's the most efficient.

143.6 ORTG (next highest is Grill at 126.0 and then Conditt at 123.1)
Low usage (12.4%, could probably stand to be higher)
73.8% TS (highest on the team... he makes shots and draws fouls/makes his free throws)
Good rebounder
Decent assist numbers, very few turnovers, smart with the ball and the possession
Good defender, seems to have a knack for drawing charges
4.5% block percentage... which is almost as high as Conditt (4.6%)
7/15 from three, tied for highest % on the team

It's not any one thing. He's just dependably above average in all ways.

Kind of a "Mario" character from Nintendo sports games -- maybe no great strengths but also no weaknesses.

All this when he was behind the curve on conditioning and practice time.

I felt like he was ISU's best on-ball defender last year and now he gets to play with 4 other guys that put pressure on the ball.

I gasped when he hit that Curry-distance 3 vs. Creighton. If his 3pt shooting stays consistent all year, that is a huge lift for the team (same could be said about Caleb "Turnaround Jumper from 25" Grill) since the 3 starting guards are not consistent from 3.

Cyclone Nation loves Tre. And slightly more when he's hitting treys.

Like every facet of this team, including personnel like Tre and George, have seen tremendous upgrades.
Tre has hit some shots and been a playmaker - how about that no-look assist on the breakaway dunk vs Creighton! He's playing w confidence and I attribute that to player development by the coaches!

I agree with this offensively. Defensively, just switch Kalscheur in for Grill. Grill has been very good defensively, but his lateral quickness is just not up to par with Hunter-Kalscheur-Brockington. However, there are not many that are, that trio is a joy to watch. They just hounded Nembhard who had been a very efficient player until we played them. Life was extremely difficult and he had by far his worst game even with the two lucky three pointers that would have made his night look downright dreadful if not for luck. It reminds me of the old Big East, it was (and has been) an absolute treat to watch.

I do like the starting lineup as is, though. Grill and Kunc are just perfect bench players. Efficient, low usage, and sound defensively. They provide tons of flexibility for substitution patterns as our 6th and 7th men. I know you weren't calling out a new starting lineup, just the best lineup and, to your point, these are the guys getting the majority of the minutes (with Kalscheur included in there).

Yeah, I am generally fine with the starting lineup. If anything, if pressed to make a change, I would want Kunc over Enaruna instead of Grill over Kalscheur, but it ain't broke. Don't fix it.

Grill is actually #4 on the team in minutes...

1. Brockington
2. Kalscheur
3. Hunter
4. Grill
5. Kunc
6. Conditt
7. Enaruna
8. Jackson
9. Jones

While writing about the guards, I thought I'd say something nice about Kalscheur. There were a ton of guys in the Hoiberg and Prohm eras where if they weren't making outside shots, they were a cement collar around the neck of the team. Kalscheur is crazy inconsistent on the offensive end, but even on nights where he's not getting or making shots, he's still making an impact as a total pest on the defensive end.

Having guys like that might not raise your ceiling but they greatly raise your floor. Sure, that bench flamethrower going 5/7 from three is nice, but Kalscheur gives you all-B12 defense every night.

Like? Young Thomas and Naz? Because as upperclassmen they both competed well defensively. And all shooters, even when slump, add value to an offense.

No offense to any of these guys, many of them were great players, but...

Scott Christopherson
underclassmen Naz and Matt
Jordan Ashton
Hallice Cooke
Donovan Jackson
Lindell Wigginton
Rasir Bolton

I put those last two on there because they could both fill it up offensively, but both struggled with efficiency (every brilliant play was matched by a boneheaded turnover) and were below average PGs.

I loved me some Thug Life, don't get me wrong there, but if he wasn't making shots he's not one you want to bet the game on with his defense. What made him good was he was mostly "on" all the time.

He's the career leader in 3% as a Cyclone, after all.

I trust the coaches and feel if it's not broke then don't fix it. Both Grill and Kunc are getting lots of minutes off the bench.

I agree and would add that Kalscheur has a confidence and toughness to him. Even if he's not hitting shots I feel good with him on the floor.

Definitely, but it's funny because with this team, when one guy goes out, I'm almost always excited about seeing the next one come in. I'm sure that the tougher schedule ahead will sometimes reveal more differences between the starters and the bench players, but for the most part, the machine keeps rolling regardless of who is in there.

So basically just underclassmen Matt and Naz.

Cement collars? That seems like a really poor use of hyperbole if this is your list.
Ashton and Cooke barely played. No one would say Bolton and Wigginton were dependent on their shots to make an impact. Scotty and DJ both were not cement collars when not shooting well. Their spacing contributions alone were still valuable, and Scotty in particular had a very underrated handle and overall game. He was part-time pg on a tournament team
