Lou Holtz dead at 89

I saw him Coach two games. The first one when he was @ Arkansas and the last one @ Notre Dame. He was a really good innovative young coach when I saw him for the first time in the 1980 Sugar Bowl.

This will be an unpopular opinion considering most people loved the guy, but I couldn’t stand him. The way ESPN would trot him out like this venerable statesman of college football, all the while ignoring the fact that damn near every program he coached at was on sanctions when he left. Do you know how hard it was to get caught cheating back then!?

The best thing about Lou was Chris Hassel’s impression of him.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but his death isn't really a time to trot this out.

His shortest collegiate coaching stop was at Minnesota for two seasons. He had a clause in his MN contract that he could leave for Notre Dame so long as he took MN to a bowl game

MN received the Independence Bowl bid in 1985. Holtz didn’t coach the game; he already accepted the ND job

That would've a no brainer type of move.

I hated them both.

I know nothing about their respective personal lives, but they were pricks as media guys

Yeah, I'm with you.

Holtz was also a prick as a coach - had a great reputation between all of the physically attacking players allegations, turning a blind eye to steroids, constant NCAA infractions, etc.

Rest in Peace Coach Holtz!

You were One in a Million and it was always inspiring to talk with you when we got the chance.

Condolences to the Holtz family.

The 80's had some of the craziest coaches in college sports. Just big characters. Johnny Orr, Lou, Billy Tubbs, Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, and the list goes on and on. Those guys are all dying now and it's sad. Even if they were a bad guy character

I heard him speak years ago ,great speaker booming voice and funny

I never thought about aging like this: the fewer the people who reply to Lou Holtz's passing the older I am. Forgotten or never heard of icon.
Yikes!
