The potential lineup is starting to fill-in. A couple of concerns are still the obvious holes at 165 & 184 / can Degen hold 149 weight or will he be moving up?

125: Mackall
133: Gomez /Simmons
141: Parker
149: Degen
157: Straw / Leisure (Carr ?)
165: (Foca - I didn't realize he was a jr)
174: Coleman
184: (Shapiro /Sherry?)
197: Colbray
285: Harrington/Gremmel

Definitely won't be Foca at 165, since he'll still be a high school senior.

184 will probably be Bush, unless we are able to get an immediately eligible transfer there.

With natural progression from returners and two redshirt freshmen coming in at 133 and 174, we should be better at nine weights. However, wrestling is not like a video game, where a sophomore is always better than he was as a freshman. We've seen that with several of our own guys from the past eight years or so, where guys had really promising freshman years, and then plateaued for three years after that.

With this coaching staff, though, I expect to see more year-to-year progression from the guys coming back.

184 is the only weight where I don't expect an improvement, but since we didn't even have a national qualifier there, it won't be a huge setback either. I'm basing this off the guys we have in the room right now. Obviously a transfer could change expectations some.

My best guess:
125: Mackall
133: Gomez
141: Parker
149: Degen
157: Straw (Carr redshirts)
165: Jennings or a transfer (St. John??)
174: Coleman
184: Swalla or Bush or a transfer
197: Colbray
HWT: Harrington

No idea who the transfers may be, just hopeful we add some people to increase depth in the room.
I agree with this but my biggest question being 165 - St John/Jennings. At 184 - I thought Bush did a decent job and think he has just as much potential for improvement as any of the other guys. He's got a funky style and needs to improve on his feet. I'm hopeful the coaching staff will coach them ALL up and we see a lot of improvement out of all 10 weights next year.

Another scenario would be to have Carr go at 157 and Straw jump up to 165. I'd prefer he redshirt because we will still have a young team with a bright future.

Not sure with how Straw does with 157. Leisure 157 Straw 165? I am hopeful someone will cement them self at 165 this off season between Jennings/St. John (and I don't care who, I trust the coaches)

Straw is not cutting much to get to 157. He would be a very small 165 (maybe Leisure has a larger frame to grow into a 65?). My biggest issue with Bush is watching him wrestle in neutral. I don't know if I saw him take one shot all year which was rather frustrating. If he ever got taken down, the match was pretty much over. He did catch one guy last year, but other than that he had to ride a guy out and win 1-0 it seemed.

I think the key to the season is Gomez wrestling up to his HS creds and Colbray figuring out that being aggressive for the entire 3 periods is in his best interest. We have seen many wrestlers like Gomez come in and tear it up as a freshmen. The kid is a true blue chipper, IMO.

I wish I knew more about Leisure. Didn’t get to see him this year. His record was fantastic but it seems out redshirts wrestled a fairly easy tournament season. Not a lot of true D1 competition. If he could solidify 57 that would be a big boost. I like what I saw from Straw but this team needs upgrades across the board.

Unless a miracle happens 65 and 84 are going to have similar results as this year. Dresser needs to close on a couple of studs this recruiting cycle.

I love the direction of he program but man it is slow work to turn a wrestling program around. Injuries can just wipe out a season as depth is hard to come by unless you’re PSU.

I think Shapiro could be the 184 guy that we're all looking for. He was impressive this year in HS. Just like Carr, I'd prefer to see him redshirt.

Straw might surprise you. His cutting to 149 last year caused him to leave the team. So it must have been a significant cut. 157 is only 8 pounds more. Sometimes the eye test doesn’t tell the whole story and guys perform better moving up. Especially with one hour weigh ins. He’s a strong kid, one hour weigh ins are hard on those body types.
Leisure would need to add serious strength to go 157 or 165, IMO

Agreed Straw is strong and Leisure would need to add strength. I’m going off what some people in Indee have told me.

Going to change my HWT prediction FITB next year to Gremmel. Sounds like Harrington is most likely going to graduate and move on from wrestling and Nolting is no longer a part of the team

Whoa, that would be a fairly significant loss.

Obviously college wrestling is a grind, so if he’s ready to move on from that and start his career, I wish him the best of luck.

Any idea if the coaching staff was expecting this, at least to a certain degree? Hopefully Gremmel is ready to step up.

The Simmons and Breitenbach departures were kind of expected IMO, even though Simmons would’ve provided nice depth.

I don’t think it was too surprising to the staff. We will be thin at heavyweight next year though, and Gremmel tends to be injury prone. May not be able to redshirt Duggan which would kind of suck, or just take some forfeits in Duals.

And who knows? Maybe Marcus will change his mind and just needs a couple weeks off (best case scenario anyway)

Going to be a good 3 years or longer to see some big strides in this program. We all should have known that, but it's still going to be tough to wait that long.

We're still in the "weeding out" the roster stage before we can really get to the "building it back up again" stage right now. It's going to take a while, so we'll have to be patient. That's another reason to RS guys like Carr, as long as he's ok with it. We're still going to be pretty bad next year, so why waste a year of Carr on a bad season.
