Land O Lakes changing "Racist" packaging

Saddest part is our Native American culture used to be prominent. It was one money, city names, sports, etc. Now we just want to rid of all of it. We should be going the opposite way. Keeping it and making it more a part of our culture. There are things we could learn from the Native Americans who were here before us. That seems much better than eliminating them from all common culture.
Except the land o lakes girl is a white girl in a costume. Its not an accurate depiction of a native american. And I'm no expert on butter but I'm pretty sure that came along with the colonization from Europe. But beyond that, yes you are learning a lot about native Americans from the packaging of your butter.

Yeah, but we also were also just using them as mascots.

Edit: here was a story from Wisconsin public radio that I found interesting: https://www.wpr.org/he-acted-his-hi...later-he-calls-ending-native-american-mascots

Given the sex trafficking and abuse of Native American women and girls, hard to find this funny.

I don't have any particular opinion on this instance but it seems to me that people mistake prevalence of caricatures with respecting a culture. Rather than actually respecting a culture.

On the other side I think people mistake removing caricatures as solving the problem when you really just need to educate people. Someone mistaking a caricature as respecting the culture isn’t doing it out of hate they are doing it out of ignorance.

Absolutely agree, good post.

So, let me get this straight - the company doesn't mention race at all as a motivator, the article doesn't quote a single person calling the old design racist other than a couple of twitter trolls, and this is the standard rebranding of old imagery that essentially every single brand goes through regularly to modernize, and yet it's somehow a sign of PC culture run amok? You guys realize you're getting played by Fox on this one, right?

Is it on fox? I haven't watched much for TV news for a long time.

I think a lot of times the solution is probably to do both. Because I agree, I think a lot of it (if not the vast majority) is based in ignorance. However, that doesn’t mean we keep the caricature up

As I get older, it's a little sad to see things associated with my childhood disappear. As a kid, I remember a friend that showed how cutting out her knees the same size as the butter she was holding and moving it up, gave us the closest thing we could get to a dirty picture. Kids nowadays don't need imagination they just jump on the internet and find things I could never imagine! o_O

Smart. As someone who works in the industry, it's basicly all the same stuff. You pay a lot for that Land O Lakes box.
can you explain irish butter and why my dad pays like 5 dollars for it...

Was anyone complaining before? In the press release they mentioned nothing about racism.

How about we just start treating native Americans better instead? I am sure that would help them more than butter logos.
