Kickers

I keep seeing the narrative that our special teams is bad. Can someone explain the reasoning for thinking this. because I don't think they've been bad, I think they have been limited by circumstances.

1. Punts have been pretty good
2. Kickoffs have been pretty good
3. Punt returns have been mainly fair catches but that is mainly dictated by the punt. Sure we'd like to get more and better returns but I'd rather have the returner make the smart play.
4. Kickoff returns are similar to punts in that they are dictated by the kickoffs and with the current rules there is more touch backs and fair catches.
4. FG's while we have had some misses I feel we are still pretty decent.

A poor punt gave Iowa excellent field position for their only touchdown.

A massive punt return error gave Iowa the game.

If we just go 50% on field goals against Baylor, we win. We've had multiple FGs blocked between this year and last. One was a TD, and the other was damn near a TD.

Also, I believe he punted 2 thru the end zone, thus the net yardage was crap.

I think it's the hardest position to figure out in sports. The best kickers in the world can go into a mental lapse and become terrible kickers. Mason Crosby had a year where he was just horrible. Luckily Green Bay stuck with him but they almost cut him. It's a weird spot. We just tend to get guys that are always in a mental spot.

For several years we were just bad so you noticed when the special teams did something and thought they were good. Now that we have a team which is solid, it makes people think our special teams are not that great. If you leave talking about how great your punter or kick returners are, you probably don’t have a very good team.

Lol at people making excuses, if its so tough to find a kicker, how did UNI find a walk on, back up who is money from 50 ?

With the b1g style of play CMC prefers, he's going to find him self in close games and is going to need to put more of a focus on special teams as a whole but the kicking game especially. For as detail oriented as he is and claims to be focused on, his special teams lack discipline.

Conner is a pretty good college kicker inside 40. If they want to continue to try the longer ones, why not see if one of the other guys can hit the deep ones.

I'm sorry, but if you think they have no data on who is best on long field goals I would like to talk to you about an opportunity to buy into a new business I just opened. Company is called "AYFKMWTS Inc."

I will apologize in advance.

NCAA should just eliminate kickoffs and punts. I fully understand the inherent danger in fielding / returning kicks, and rules have been implemented to address this. But it's gotten to the point where 90% of kicks (at least for us) are fair-caught. Just give the other team the ball 40 yards away in punting situations and at the 25 after a score.

I'll submit a friendly wager that we'll see someone else tried on "long" field goal prior to the end of the year precisely because they do have the data.

I'll take that bet also. Find the sap who thinks the same guy will kick long ones all year. I want to redo my bathroom.;) "Practice stats are great, but intestinal fortitude is better."

I like it that we are friends.

I'm leaning toward all 3 phases so far. Defense hasn't given up much but contain has been bad and tackling is lacking. Offense seems to lack much for continuity.
