Kickers are difference makers

There were a few kicks that OU only got to the goal line. Clones didn’t attempt a return.

I agree that ISU needs a kicker that can get the ball through the end zone, but credit to OU on actually attempting a return and forcing the issue.

I was surprised that Kene didn’t attempt a few more.

We joke about a st coach... But I have to wonder if not having one is a factor in why we lost that kicker to Co.

Assalley is so bad

It's not Assalley's fault. It's on CMC that Assalley is our best FG kicker we have. He was a walk on for crying out loud. He does the best he can, but he's not a college level kicker.

And now the elite kicking recruit we had coming in isn't coming to ISU anymore..... so we've got that going for us.

Our kicking game has cost us games. Special teams in general has cost us games. Along with the offense.

All 3 of our losses this season we had atrocious special teams and really bad offense too.

Ogamba can get it there, can't he? I assume he's still injured?

I don’t remember hearing what happened to him? The ability to kick it to the endzone would have made a big difference this season. Unfortunate injury.

If we want to win in the margins we need a kicker that can make every PAT and the vast majority of FGs.

The guy who was brought in specifically to kick off has been hurt all year.
The #2 guy got hurt early in the season.
The #3 guy actually got a couple of touchbacks, but has been MIA since.
Nettles is the #4 guy.

How are they getting injured? Multiple kickers being hurt is unheard of.

A not talked about issue is that it seems like quite a few kickoffs have been out of bounds at the 5 yd line this year.

Was going to post something similar. Also noting, we signed a grad transfer kicker from Liberty last year, Alex Probert. Probert I believe, has not dressed for any games this year. Assuming he was/is injured.

One great thing about Matt Campbell is he looks back on the season to self-evaluate the program. I am optimistic that he will see that special teams are holding this team back. And it is not just one facet:
  • Our PR yards might be the worst in P5
  • We need a kick-off guy who can hit the end-zone unless there is a strong wind in his face.
  • Assalley was an accurate kicker under 40 yards, but at a P5 level the FG kicker should have the leg for 50-55 yards. Even if a team needs to go with a kicker who only kicks over 45-50 yard field goals.
  • Even our punt game with Rivera was inconsistent this season. Seemed like more shanks than normal.

Would be nice to emphasize SPT the way they did at Florida during their championship days.
