Making a trip to KC for the first time next weekend for my birthday. There will be a group of 7 of us. Staying a block away from P&L.

Figured we'd get dinner (any suggestions for a steakhouse that won't break the bank?) then head to the bars Friday night.

Saturday we're hoping to hit up top golf then find a game watch for the UT game that night.

Anything else we absolutely have to do? And any alumni members know of a game watch for the UT game? Keep in mind all of us will be losing our KC virginity.

Steak house that won't break the bank? I don't know of such a thing. But I recommend Anton's just south of P&L, northside of the Crossroads district. Another nearby option that might wow you guys is The Parlor- a higher end foodcourt concept. It's very affordable. Lots of interesting ethnic, street food, and standard fair to satisfy everyone. For instance the best sandwich i've ever had was a pastrami at Farm to Market and they is a great pizza vendor, Providence Pizza. My personal recommendation is the Korean place, Sura. http://www.parlorkcmo.com/

I second the recommendation for Kelly's. Its a laid-back, large sportsbar in Westport where unofficial Cyclone's gamewatches happen nearly every game if i'm not mistaken. My favorite part about the place that you can smoke cigars on the roof. Westport is a trendy hood crawling with 20 and 30 somethings who are too cool for P&L

Another local recommendation is to visit Boulevard Brewery. It has such an excellent tasting room and is sure to please you guys if you like good beer. You might be wondering, 'how do I know if i like good beer?' I can help you answer that. If you drink domestic beer like Busch Lite you don't like good beer. Go to Boulevard.

Alright so on the steakhouse, we're going out in suits Friday night as I have this affinity for dressing up. So were looking for a place that's at least somewhat classy for dinner Friday night. Doesn't necessarily have to be a steakhouse.

Slice of pizza at Grinders, Wings at the Peanut, Q39, Antons has great steaks, but you will break the bank. As an Iowa State fan you have to go to Kellys in Westport. Then go to char bar for bbq. Port Fonda for Mexican food. If you guys live Dive bars I suggest Daves Stagecoach INN. Breweries during the day I would hit up are Cinderblock, Casual Animal, and Border Brewing Company.

Torn Label? Boulevard? :) my favs

Those are also very good. I could have put in Double Shift since its within walking distance of the other ones I suggested. I like boulevard its a little busy for me, and I am really enjoying the beer that Casual Animal has been pushing out lately

are you guys adventurous or more looking for a solid american place (no shame in that) How much are you wanting to spend. I am an avid food guy down here in KC and am happy to give my well-informed opinion.

Good call.
I hit casual animal a while back when it first opened and honestly wasn't too impressed. I'll have to give it another look.

Give the Hereford House a try. Good selection of steaks in the $30-50 range.

With such a large group everyone differs in their budget and taste. I love all kinds of food (barring Indian). I could probably get everyone in the group to buck up $30-$40 per person for dinner that night. Really appreciate your insight

Another Steakhouse idea: start the evening at Stockyard Brewery then go next door to Golden Ox- throwback speakeasy. This would be a cool option in the off-the-beaten path Westbottoms. Stockyard is very refined in style, decor. Country Western thing by a heavy hitting designer. Your formal attire will be just fine there with all the recovered woodwork and murals. (Seriously)

Crossroads:
As far as walking into a place in a suit, i dig it. I second Tom's Distillery in Crossroads. Also nearby is Extra Virgin. (Or for fine-dining, creative Italian is Michael Smith next door.) Really fun small-plate place with high-end cocktails and food.

One of the nicest restaurants in town is Affare, high-end German inspired. A step down, but still worthy of your suits, and a few blocks away is the Austrian Grunauer. Amazing German beers on tap and excellent food.

Finally I recommend going to the barside of Blue Stem near Westport. Bluestem may be the finest restaurant in town run by an award winning chef. You will be happy with their gastropub fare on the bar side, or if someone is wanting to drop serious cash then make a reservation in the dining room.

I encourage all you suits to chase some skirts in class, go to Extra Virgin and order some classic cocktails. Old fashion, manhattan, negroni, side-car, sazerac etc. They will have renditions of these drinks. Lord have mercy. And for the love of God if you order steak somewhere you need to drink good red wine with it like a grown up. ;-)

Finally, for breakfast get yourselves some WORLD CLASS pastries and coffee at Messenger, an epic, very ambitions triplex dedicated to the fine arts of coffee and pastries.

Still got your suits on and looking for a stylish late-night place? Go to Green Lady Lounge for live jazz. No cover. Also in the Crossroads. Basically the less time you spend in P&L the better.

If its your first time in KC the bar scene at Power and Light will be quite and experience, but you will also want to go to Westport. Crossroads is a good area to hang out during the day and eat and visit some breweries
There's plenty of potential at Power and Light. For food like other have said Q39 or Kansas City Joes. Top Golf is in Overland Park. I heard there's an ax throwing room in the West Bottoms. Sharks is a cool pool hall in Olathe.

This speak easy you guys talk about sounds right up our alley. Excited to give that a try!
If you want to go to a speakeasy in downtown I recommend PS speakeasy, they have live music from 8-11 on Saturday. Its in the basement of Hotel Philips and you have to go to the front desk of the hotel and ask for a table to get in. Here's a link - https://www.hotelphillips.com/ps-speakeasy.html
