NFL: Kansas City Chiefs Thread

The Rice suspension hearing was scheduled for Sept. 30th, I wonder if the Chiefs did not tell him to take the 6th games now, when the teams is still healthy, and WR is a position of depth before the season. Easier for the team to get by now when everyone is healthy, than wait a month and find out the WR room is getting thinned out by injuries. There was no guarantee the arbitrator would not give him the 10 games suspension the league first announced and he appealed.

Rice will miss games with the Eagles, Ravens, Chargers and Lions, luckily all the but Chargers game is at home. We should be ok with him gone for the Jags and Giants games on the road.

Doubt the team said anything considering they are part of the entity that supposedly wanted 8-10 games. NFLPA would have had a field day with that.

The league wasn't getting 10 games, or even the 8 that was mentioned recently. That many games is so much higher than all the similar incidents in recent memory. Rice and the NFLPA were pushing for 4 max, so this is the likely middle ground that the arbitrator would have settled on anyway. The league still gets one of the harshest punishments ever for this type of incident, Rice can start his suspension week 1 and not have his season interrupted, KC keeps an extra WR on cut down day, and we can all just move on with actual football.

If the Chiefs would have had their way it would have been a 2 week suspension and done with. Reports were that the league had given him a 10 game suspension and the union thought that was too many and appealed the sentence, forcing it to the 3rd party to decide.
Maybe Rice and the Chiefs figured take a 6 game suspension and get it over with, instead of waiting when they could be beat up by then and now he is suspended, making it even worse.

You're missing the point. The team is part of the league. By definition they were never on Rice's side as it comes to advocating against whatever punishment the league wanted. KC may have not liked that the league was seeking 8-10 games, but they have zero recourse outside of ousting Goodell and the league's disciplinary arm.

According to a quick google search an NFL team can appeal a suspension, but generally it's the players union or the player himself that does. Its rare for the team to get directly involved, but they also have the power to appeal a suspension, if they chose to.

Rice and the union appealed the suspension, an arbitrator and a date had been chosen for Sept 30th, the Chiefs know Rice is going to be suspended, the only questions are when and for how long. The league wanted 10 games, the union 4 games. It's very easy to see, Veach, working with Rice and players union, contacting the league and agreeing to a 6 game suspension now. The team is healthy now, that might not be in the case in a month when the appeal is heard, and this way they know how long he is going to be out. Under the appeal it could have been 4 games. but also could have been 10. Better to take the 6 games, with the healthy WR room and go forward then risking the first week of October he is suspended and you are already down a WR or two.
This was a smart move by everyone, and allows the Chiefs and Rice to move with the season.

The CBA only allows the player or the NFLPA on his behalf to appeal discipline set down by the league.

Ok, so google was wrong, none of that changes the idea, that it's better to have him serve it now, than waiting until the end of Sept. for the appeal to be heard and then having him being suspended then, because they do not know the length, nor if the teams is going to be healthy then.

Kinda worried about the defense this year. I think Mahomes and Kelce are going to have e a great year. Wish we upgraded the running back spot too (trade for Breece Hall)

Other than Mahomes getting hurt, this is about as bad of a start as possible. WR crew already thin again this year
