The math gets fuzzy, but missed game checks reduce his overall salary for 2023. However, the final tag number would be 120% of his previous yearly compensation, that takes into account pro rata signing bonuses and other things that essentially amounts to his cap number (around 28 mil this year), or avg of the top 5 players (22.6 mil) at his position, whichever is greater. Since he has the highest cap hit of any DT, skipping games reduces both of those numbers. They were talking on 810 yesterday that if he does sit out weeks of the regular season that it would start dropping his tag number next year if the Chiefs did tag him. Not sure how accurate that is as I didn't hear the whole discussion. It is a lot of money for a non-QB. I believe this is the last year we could see Jones with the Chiefs.
If he misses game checks, his cap number drops, which also drops the top 5 average. However, 7 games is basically the point where his salary at 120% and average of the top 5 roughly equal out. Of course that is also the game he has to report by to accrue a season and have the final year of his contract count, otherwise he would not even be a free agent next year.
So by sitting out games up to week 8, he could end up costing himself around $17 million in lost salary and reduced tag number next year if KC goes that route, That's on top of the over $1 million in unwaivable fines he has accrued.
