NFL: Kansas City Chiefs Thread

They were talking on 810 yesterday that if he does sit out weeks of the regular season that it would start dropping his tag number next year if the Chiefs did tag him. Not sure how accurate that is as I didn't hear the whole discussion. It is a lot of money for a non-QB. I believe this is the last year we could see Jones with the Chiefs.
The math gets fuzzy, but missed game checks reduce his overall salary for 2023. However, the final tag number would be 120% of his previous yearly compensation, that takes into account pro rata signing bonuses and other things that essentially amounts to his cap number (around 28 mil this year), or avg of the top 5 players (22.6 mil) at his position, whichever is greater. Since he has the highest cap hit of any DT, skipping games reduces both of those numbers.

If he misses game checks, his cap number drops, which also drops the top 5 average. However, 7 games is basically the point where his salary at 120% and average of the top 5 roughly equal out. Of course that is also the game he has to report by to accrue a season and have the final year of his contract count, otherwise he would not even be a free agent next year.

So by sitting out games up to week 8, he could end up costing himself around $17 million in lost salary and reduced tag number next year if KC goes that route, That's on top of the over $1 million in unwaivable fines he has accrued.

That's the problem. If we tag him next year it's like $31M. That's STUPID money for a non-QB, even if he's as good as Jones. Jones does have some leverage here. I believe it would be a different story if the tag was $20M.

I understand Jones wants paid and he deserves to be. But his asking price is a bit much. Aaron Donald's contract cannot be used as a comparison. He also wants more than the others that got paid this offseason. But they're also 3-5 years younger than him. This is his second big contract, that is their first.

Veach seems content with letting guys walk if the money isn't right. Have to trust him at this point.

Yeah its a crappy situation for sure. At some point just like Tyreek Hill you have to ask what is more important to you, winning Super Bowls or getting paid a few extra mil a year? If winning championships while getting fairly compensated is not your priority then we'll find some mediocre team to trade you to that will pay you that and will reload with talent from the draft picks we get back. Kelce is probably underpaid for what he does but he's made it clear he would rather win than be the highest paid at his position.

Would be on the phone with Chicago.
Pitch him to the NFC, with someone that has a high enough draft pick, but also quickly approaching a win now phase.

Core on this team is Mahomes and him alone (Kelce, but not for very long). Reload. Going to need some money for Creed & Bolton.
We obviously have history with Chicago's GM too.

If I'm Chicago I trade for Jones and Jonathan Taylor. It's go time with Fields on the rookie contract and a relatively down NFC when compared to the loaded AFC.

The amount of money to be made off the field when you're on a winning team is insane. You can't tell me Kelce would have the podcast popularity, numerous endorsements and host SNL if he played for the Browns.

Saw this yesterday breaking it down

If that's the case, which I have no reason to doubt, Jones would be an absolute fool to skip games this year. Assume he misses the sack incentive with missing 7 games and he is 100% getting tagged if the number is $23.25M.

It is great to see how quickly the cap analysts can prove that his threat is complete BS. If he misses 7 games, he basically gets about half of his $20 million salary this year and he destroys his own tag number down to $23 million for next year. He will never make that lost money up in a new contract.

Had the Chiefs known it would get this sticky, I am sure they would have traded him before the draft. Now the tag and trade approach for next year is looking likely.

With his age and number of years in the league, he is approaching the point you mentioned of never making back the money he is going to lose. He gambled by sitting out, but every game he misses he loses leverage to the Chiefs.

This is what gets me about some of these players, they have to realize that in a negation, there always is the point, where your services are not worth what you are asking for, and by replacing you the drop off plus the money saved makes up for paying you the amount you want.

As much as I want Jones to be there for the next couple of years and as much as I am supportive of a player getting everything they can, I don't want it risking any long term plans they may have for other players.

One of the downside of hitting on later round picks is those guys don't automatically come with the 5th year option of 1st rounders. Guys like Sneed, Gay, Bolton, and others are all coming up in the next few seasons. And while we hope that Veach can keep finding these guys, at some point you're going to want to try to keep some of them around beyond their rookie contract. Granted not all of them will necessarily command top dollar contracts, but having more flexibility to keep some of them around would be a good thing.

Specifically though, they should be doing everything they can now to prepare to keep Bolton around as he has all the makings of a cornerstone defensive player in the mold of Derrick Johnson

For a team like the Chiefs to stay at a high level they just to follow the blueprint of what the Pats did. You get and lock down you HOF QB, then you do not fall in love with other players. Draft them and when they get to expensive, let them leave. Add yearly for places of need that will come in for one- or two-year contracts with the chance to win a SB.

Spend money on drafting and developing the best you can, and do not be afraid to allow a player to walk that has overpriced themselves. Like Jones is currently doing. If I was Veech, I would be spending this week calling around and seeing what I could get to trade him. If the package is not there, I then tell his agent, this is our final deal, if you do not sign it, then sit out and we will tag you and trade you before the draft next year. Like I stated before, Jones losses leverage every day after the season starts, plus game checks.

So Jones is now saying that he is willing to set out until week 8, he has to report at the end of week eight to be a free agent next season. If he refuses to report then, the contact will still be in place next season.

He was fined $1.4 million for missing training camp, and will start missing $1.1 million per game check now that we are getting into the season. If he sits out until the 8 week, that means he will have lost over $9 million dollars. Careers are short enough in the NFL for many, and to miss that many checks, no matter how rich you claim to be, is going to cost him in the future. Throw in the fact that I do not ever remember a person sitting out and coming back to anywhere the salary and production they were at before they sat out.
Giving up 9 million is just dumb. I mean you want probably around 10-12 million more in your contract well you just negated most of that even if you get what you want. He has had two great seasons yes and last year was special but the year before I thought he was just good not great. He misses that much time he won’t be great this year.

The Chiefs traded the WR from the Squawks to Carolina for a 7th round swap conditional pick. Chiefs will get the higher pick in the 7th round.

Good to see that they something for a FA signing instead of releasing him. No way he gets through waivers to put on the practice squad.
