Hey, does anybody know if they're putting new video boards in? I'd like something new to complain about the minute there's a technical difficulty or it doesn't look exactly like what I've pictured in my head...:jimlad:
Wait.... they are putting in new video boards? When is this supposed to happen? :jimlad:

The thing I always wished about the press box is that instead of how they built it, if they would have reduced it from 3 to 2 levels and made it 50% wider.

The current press box was added in 1997, which was a time when Iowa State athletics didn't have much extra funding to go around, which led to it being smaller and done more cheaply than what would have happened if it was done at a different point in time.

Do any engineering/construction/architecture types know if it would be feasible to add on to the current press tower in both directions? Or would you likely need to take it down and start over if something was ever done. If it was just an addition, I could see a fiscal case for redoing the layout plus adding space to make a club section that fills a demographic between Sukup and the Jack Tice Club/suites.

Not in the fields you aske but, I am sure they could add on to it. But additions would take the same or similar supports to what the current one has. That being said the entire concourse area would have to be redesigned and rebuilt to accommodate those supports and structures. But, it may be easier to rip out whats there and start over, and build something more in line with current trends. Either way it is a huge cost.

I think you're probably right, but whenever I look at the back side I always wonder if it was built/planned with the ability for it to be expanded without additional ground structures being needed. Something like an additional 30% to 50%.

I agree with this. Probably super expensive.
I am curious what our total premium indoor seating is compared to other big press box schools. Mainly the stadiums that just have one big Press box and nothing else.

We could just put up 30ft poles across the top of east side that hold tarp with picture of a pressbox on it. I have a 40% Shutterfly coupon this month. Wind may be an issue, though....lol.

I just posted a page or so ago.

ISU has 45 suites.

WVU has 30.
Clemson has 34.
Kinnick has 45.

Those were the ones I found easily and quickly.

Our suites count is right in line with most.

Thanks, sometimes its hard to keep up with threads :(

I will go back and look, but what do the Jack Trice Club and Sukup count as? Are those counted in your number of ISU Suites?

No they're not, those other numbers also wouldn't include club sections. ISU has as many suites as they will probably ever need. There is potentially demand for additional premium/club type seating.

Those are club sections, not suites. The numbers I listed are for suites only.

I didnt look up the number of club seats. But with both of those, I would guess we are somewhere in the ballpark with others. I am sure we could expand those, and increase income, but with that I also am sure there are ways to increase club sections that would be far cheaper than building a Skybox for them.

The uniqness of the hillsides is cool and the cheap JCC tickets get people to games that otherwise might not come. That said bowling in the entire stadium is almost certainly a higher priority than expanding the press box and I doubt that happens anytime soon

Isn't the next step to install an upper deck over Sukup (once demand matches supply)? I thought the infrastructure was designed to support an upper deck there.

Can there be much "bowling in" while the Jacobson Building still exists?

Not sure how that would work without ripping out the video board

I would be surprised if we see another capacity expansion anytime in the near future. The trend in live sporting events is less seating, but more amenities for a better game day experience.

Looking at the NFL, both Buffalo and Tennessee have new stadiums being built that are smaller capacity than their current stadiums. Buffalo (Highmark Stadium) is going from 71k to 62k, Tennessee is going from 69k to an estimated 55k-60k. Even the three newest stadiums - SoFi, Allegiant, US Bank - are 70k or less.

For Iowa State, 61.5k is a comfortable capacity. Future upgrades should be focused on providing a great fan experience. The sound system and ribbon boards are a part of that.

Better fan experience could be better seating (real stadium chairs) and more concessions. Not sure that an concession expansion can be done or be worth the cost.

The concession setup is kind of handcuffed by the overall design of JTS. You have one level for everyone not in club sections or suites. Compared to say Arrowhead where there's seperate concourses for the lower and upper bowls plus the middle club section has its own

How about we fix the NEZ videoboard? I would hope that's under warranty since half the pieces have been faded since inception. Saw somebody fixing them during the game, which seems like literally the only inconvenient time to do it.
Were they fixing them or just watching the game through the open spaces?
