Jim Walden is crazy...

I disagreed with Walden that Florida was #1 and Ohio State #2 going into the game, however I didn't like how people bashed him for it. He's a voter. If that's the way he wanted to vote, so be it...

Re: Way to go Walden!

I'm sure this has been mentioned by someone, but at least Jim Walden had enough guts to not be lead around like a bunch of sheep.

Good for him!

Well said. What made me so sick about Ohio State this year (and USC last year) is a few of the big national media types say how good a team is. And then the local media follows the same example using the same reasoning the national media does and they don't even look at the team themselves. I praise Walden and how he broke down each team before he voted. Most people just follow the trend and pretty soon everyone believes how great a team is, without even analyzing the teams themselves.

And then when their statements prove to be false, they find an excuse (51 Day Lay Off) to explain why they believed that. Can't people just admit they fell on to the band wagon and followed all of the hype?

I do really think calling him a FB "genius" as some might refer to him is pretty generous considering what he did as a coach was nothing impressive. Nothing against Jim as a person, I'm sure he is a great guy but if you ever have listened to him and Zabel on their Two Guys Named Jim show you've probably rolled your eyes or muttered some 4 letter words at some of the dumb things those 2 guys can say.

Then I guess I've hit the "daily double" over the course of the last several weeks! There was a thread some time ago bashing Zabel and I defended him as a radio broadcasting icon in the State of Iowa. I don't like most of what comes out of Zabel's mouth because I hate the hawks, but I understand where he's coming from...

I've heard "Two Guys Named Jim" and I find it entertaining. I lived out-of-state during the Walden-era of ISU football, so I don't know what he was like as a coach. Having said that, I enjoy listening to his thoughts when I catch him on KXNO as an AM guest of Cotlar & Co.

No harm, no foul, Travman; you're entitled to your opinion!

P.S. Thanks to those of you who contributed to my rep points! I never thought I'd sniff 500 after my early days in the Mac-must-go posse! I guess it just proves bright days are ahead for ISU!

No because most of the things Walden says usually has the words "former Iowa State Football coach" associated with the articles which I'd rather not have him associated with us in anyway most of the time. The Walden era was not a proud time in ISU FB history and most people would rather he just fall off the face of the planet and never be heard from again. Ok maybe not that harsh but you get the point.
Most people probably understand that Jim Walden came into a dismal situation under an administration, that for the most part, didn't give a hoot about the state of athletics at ISU. There were some proud moments under Walden (like beating #5 NU), and plenty of ugly ones, just like there were under DM. I have no problem with Jim Walden being associated with ISU. Neither should you.

I just hope that Chizik has more class than Dan McCarney when it comes to pointing out (over, and over, and over again) the shortcoming of the previous head coach. It gets old after 5 years, and ridiculous after 12 years. From what I've seen of GC, this shouldn't be an issue...

Re: Walden gets prognostication props on ESPN.com

See thread 'Jim Walden is crazy...' in the General College Forum. Much has been discussed already.

Excellent post. I am afraid that ol Trav, and many others on this site, is probably a little younger than us. And all he has heard was the pathetic spin of a guy that NEVER won a big game. So that is all they have to base their opinions on. They probably never saw a game that Walden coached (and I am not saying that he was a genius), just heard over and over about how the program was winless before the precious coach took the job, even though Walden has a higher winning percentage.

I ask Larry (Cotler) this morning about a simple question that he asked Walden. "Did you ask Walden who would win the game between Florida and Ohio State, even though he voted for Florida he (Walden) stated that Ohio State would win? He (Larry) replied "Yes, and that even though Walden voted for Florida he did so for the fact on strength of the schedule NOT because of a possible rematch of Ohio State and Michigan. I then proceeded to ask then if Ohio State would have won then would there have been a recourse on his voting? Larry stated "Yes".

I have more respect over these comments on Walden then when I heard it first through all the scuttlebut that he did it so there would not be a rematch of Ohio State and Michigan.
