Jared Homan

There are some things that I am far more willing to overlook than others. A college student drinking a bit is one of them. It's when someone's actions really affect others that I have the problem. Underage possession is not something I care about in the slightest. Public intox is often stupid too, although you usually have to be doing something else stupid to get one. I think Jared had already played his final season when he got in trouble for the VEISHEA thing.

The same reasoning applies to Vroman and his bit of pot. I also wouldn't have given a crap about Barryman getting caught in a bar underage if not for the fact that he had previously mugged someone (I wouldn't have let him back on the team after that).

Vandalizing other people's property certainly affects them, and OWI has the potential to be exceptionally bad. There are certainly worse things though and I'm on the fence as to whether Taylor should stay on the team.

Great post, agree completely.

I understand that the spotlight is on these guys to a degree that most of us non-athletes can't understand, but it's their responsibility not to put themselves in these situations in the first place.

Did you even freaking go to college dude? Seriously. Listen to yourself.

I graduate with a BS in mechanical engineering in May. I don't see what that has to do with anything.

Did I miss something? what did that dumbass homan do??? did he try to screw a goat at the county fair or somethin?

I may look at this in a way that is out of the mainstream but when you look at it, why should a college athlete be held to a higher standard then a college student. I know mugging someone, or raping someone, or beating someone up for a cell phone is serious stuff and should be handled as such the first time and not subject to the 3 strikes principle because you are hurting people. Mess up on that and your done in my opinion.

Public intox, or $200 vandalism, and OWI(as long as noone is hurt which is a whole different matter) are something that is a little different in my book because the only difference between me in my college years and the Mike Taylor's or Jared Homan's of the world are that they got caught and I didn't. I am not saying the OWI is not serious either because the odds are very high that someone could get hurt seriously or even killed. I am just saying I drove drunk, a lot of my friends drove drunk and by the Grace of God we were never arrested for it or killed anyone or ourselves. I'm just saying that, even though they are representatives of ISU, doesn't mean too many of us should be judging.

Not to get too preachy here, but good biblical passages pertaining to this would be "Do not judge yest ye be judged" and "He who is without sin be the first to cast the stone" at the prostitute everyone was judging at the time. I judge people way too much and am trying to not hammer on people doing exactly what I did in college only they got caught and I didn't.

I am officially off my soapbox.

When most college students mess up it is not on the evening news. Most also are not on full scholarship.

I agree, they shouldn't be. The problem is that they are. By the coaches, by the university and by the media. If I get arrested, the worst that happens is my friends see my name in the police blotter. Mike Taylor gets arrested and it's all over the news. That's the sad reality for people in that position, no matter how big or small the crime. It comes with the territory.

He broke his hand in high school because he tried to punch through a brick wall. I thought that was funny because he went to a rival school.
