ISU Stoplight camera study.

So here's the question that I have. If you are driving behind someone and the light turns yellow. Shouldn't you be slowing down just in case they decide that (unlike you) they don't need to push the yellow to try to beat the read.

Actually paying attention to the lights and then be precautious will reduce the number of rear-endings at lights.

If people would just drive within the law rather than trying to push the law to the brink then these cameras wouldn't be a problem. They only make money because people try to make up their own rules.

Rather than just sitting on the internet complaining about what happens when people break the law, why don't you try to do something. Teach people the proper rules of the road (which will reduce the number of tickets that these cameras can submit), run for city council so that you can prevent these cameras from going up, or you could just not speed, stop for the full 3 seconds when you are turning right and not push your way through a yellow light like you life depends on it.

Sounds smart to me.

Honestly, Idk how he could see if I had it on or not. I can understand if he pulled me over on the highway for not having a seatbelt because of the higher speeds.

You know as well as I do that if everybody got prosecuted according to every single little law it would be ridiculous. Generally there is some discretion involved. I just thought it was a little excessive. There are people that go way over the speed limit that are much more dangerous that could be focused on. Ticky-tack

So, because you were in town and driving slow, it's ok to break the law and not wear your seat belt?

From this study.

Two known studies have evaluated the effectiveness of extending the duration of the yellow interval. Retting and Greene cited numerous sources where extending the yellow time will reduce red light running and right-angle crashes (Retting and Greene, 1997). Another study, performed by Van der Horst and Wilimink, found a relationship between red light running and yellow duration at 11 test intersections. Their conclusions found that yellow intervals of at least 3.5 seconds are associated with minimal RLR cases (Van der Horst and Wilmink, 1996). Bonneson et al. concluded that increasing the yellow time was inversely related to the frequency of red light running and found this decreased red light running 50–70%

I do this all the time. If someone is using the left lane to drive in and not pass I flash my lights at them.

On a serious note, drivers education in this country is a joke. I'd say 98% of drivers don't even know how to set their mirrors correctly.

LOL at those who are complaining about getting ticketed... for breaking the law.

It's like their argument is "Well, yeah, that is the law... but they never do anything about it usually..."

Guess what? It's the law. If you break it, you can get ticketed any time - camera or not. If you don't like it, you should try to change it. Simple as that.

I realize it was against the law, I just felt that 127 dollar ticket for something like that was a little much. I Didn't feel the punishment fit the crime.

So do you feel that there should be a speed and distance that you are planning to travel portion to the seat belt ticket?

So you were going 30 and only about a mile.

In that case (30 mph *2)+($1 for the one mile that you were traveling)=$61

Is that better. Or I guess if you live so close to work you could've walked to work. Saved the gas cost and $127 for not following the law.

One last question, where do you draw the line with this whole "I was only going 30 and only driving 1 mile? Is it acceptable to use that after you have been at the bar? But Offffficccceeeerrr...I was almost to my hhhhooommmeee.... I wasn't even racing very far...

It is pretty steep. The question is will you wear your seatbelt when driving to work from now on? If you had just received a warning would your answer be the same?

Even though it's saved countless lives and I've never been without a seatbelt since I was 18, I still don't agree with the seatbelt law. If I want to be an idiot and drive without a seatbelt and die, I should have that right. If by me not wearing a seatbelt it hurt someone else than I would be for it. Same for the helmet law. Now if the insurance companies want to charge non-helmet users a higher premium than I would be ok with that.

Agreed. If it doesn't affect the safety of anyone else, why regulate it? I could care less if someone wants to be a hick and not wear his seatbelt.

Seat belt laws were supposed to reduce insurance costs. My premiums have never went down, why bother. Maybe it has something to do with downtown Des Moines.

Oh so you've never broken a dumb law or rule and been given a warning?

I never once said I haven't broken a law. You stated since you were in town driving slow the officer should have let you off with a warning for not wearing your seatbelt. Regardless of what you think of the law, it's a law and if you are caught breaking it, be prepared to pay the fine.

It probably did save insurance costs to some degree. But nobody said that the insurance companies had to pass those savings along to their customers.

I would agree with you, as long as when someone without health insurance and not wearing a seatbelt flies through the windshield in a car accident, I don't have to pay the extra for their stupidity.
