ISU Gambling Megathread

For all of you who dumbed my post, which of Campbell's mantras does this affair fall under? "Trust the process?" "Five star culture?" Player-driven leadership?" "Become the best version of yourself?" All these beloved Campbellisms ring pretty hollow now. Except maybe "winning in the margins."
So, these players' actions are going to change your opinion of Breece Hall, Brock Purdy, Charlie Kolar, Chase Allen, Will McDonald, Mike Rose, Anthony Johnson, and so many others? They demonstrated everything encompassed in the "Campbellisms" for 4 or 5 years.

A coach can set out their expectations, but it's still up to the players to make the right decisions. Not that Campbell will say "This isn't my problem".

I don't gamble so I am not sure how they caught them. They are underage. How does the gambling app allow them to place bets if they are under age? If they were doing it with someone else. How did they get caught. So strange.
The underage ones used an account of a parent or other person of age to place the bets. Presumably the athlete used their own phone to log into the account, some even doing it at a facility that automatically gets flagged. Not only were they doing something illegal, they were dumb when they did it.

Lee betting against ISU in a game he.played in has to be done correct? It's laughable that we rolled UT the game he bet against us.

It doesn't change my opinion of those exemplary alumni. Nor indeed does it shape my attitude toward each individual on the current team. It does impact my opinion of the program as a whole.

Free Will.

Campbell can pound his culture into kids. But he only has so much influence. A kids parent's culture impacts that student-athlete's actions. Society impact a person's actions. Iowa State's culture impacts it's student lives.

To put the blame entirely on Campbell is ignoring that student athletes are more than athletes.

But, it should be a wake up call for Coach Campbell and Jamie Pollard that ISU needs to do more. It shouldn't be tough when senior leaders might never play a sport they love again.

Winning in the margins, betting the margins. It's all pretty much the same.
They are very similar, I can now see how the players got confused.

IMO throw em all out and let the new guys step up. Could be ugly but CMC has to rebuild essentially at this point so here is where he earns his money. Gambling is a no go, sorry you couldn't see it boys, good luck in whatever you try next.
I do hope the books have reported elsewhere and those states get some pressure to act. Hate to get singled out but its a little like arguing a speeding ticket because, " there are always people speeding! Why me?'

That shows you're looking for the negative because the actions of a couple players during a short period of time carries more weight with you than dozens of players over 4 or 5 years.

A person could fairly ask if a 5 star culture can produce some bad outcomes.

I think it can.

Good wombs have borne bad sons.

Sure, but they're inconvenincing his fanhood. That's a huge deal
They’re almost helping my fandom. Iowa State will likely lose more games this year. That will suck. At the same time, I watch the games because we don’t know the outcome. If I think it’s fairly possible/likely the games are being fixed, what’s the point in watching? These investigations show that the game is being monitored

Counter argument: it’s highly likely many, many other programs have player(s) engage in sports gambling, even betting on their own team. Let’s say for example that 30 FBS programs have players gamble on football games. Does that mean your opinion on those programs as a whole is changed?

My opinion about the player is changed; my opinion about the program is unchanged
