Is Purdy the guy?

I just got done rewatching the game from Saturday (swamped at work this morning, clearly) and it is quite clear that Purdy has to be the starting QB for this team moving forward, as long as he stays healthy. This isn't a knock on Kempt or Zeb, it's just clear that he is the best playmaker out of those 3 options, and is leading an offense that was desperately in need of another playmaker.

I understand the "It's only one game, don't overreact!" mindset, but seriously, watch the game and tell me how Kempt or Zeb makes those plays to win the game. It just wouldn't have happened. So it is the freshman's job to lose as far as I'm concerned. And the thought of redshirting him, again barring injury, is laughable.

I loved what I saw from the kid and can't wait to watch him against WVU!

Great 2nd post...agree with all you say. Purdy now gives DC's a bunch more things to have to plan for...the RPO, our running backs, the deep ball, etc. Their job, leading up to OSU, stop the run and pressure the QB. And, with our defense, our offense is going to get plenty of possessions.

Good post! And you're right. Throw in everything you've stated along with a healthy-ish David Montgomery and Chase Allen and it seems like you've got a pretty dynamic offense all of the sudden. Bring on Bama!

Yep, we are 5-4 with Kempt as starter. 2 of his 4 losses were games in which he got hurt (OSU and Iowa). The other 2 losses were heartbreakers in which the refs screwed us (WVU and KSU). 4 of his 5 wins came against bowl teams. Kempt is a big reason we received our first ever BCS ranking. He was clearly the difference maker following the dismal game against Texas.

He had an incredible game, but the real test will be against WVU’s defense. Also almost every time he ran I cringed because he is freshman getting hit by solid big upper class defensive players. That gotta take a toll on your body.

Kempt against the Hawks played very well the first series. But then we switched to trying to run up the middle, and Kempt was getting no time to throw the ball on the pass plays. If KK is healthy enough to play, I have no qualms with him getting his starting position back. i also don't have a problem with Purdy coming in if the offense is not clicking.

Fun fact: 6 of Kempt's 9 starts came on the road. 8 of 9 were against bowl teams.

Oh, you think quality of play is not as simple as wins and losses? You may be on to something.

I think some of the people who want Purdy to redshirt are just thinking about keeping him around for as long as possible, every last minute that we can. Y’know, because ISU never has really good quarterbacks.

In response, I’ll offer this:

A. Easton Dean and Aiden Bouman. Yep, I know that neither is highly rated at the moment. In other words, they’re in the exact same spot Brock was at the very same point. Now, I don’t expect ‘Bama to come sniffing around Easton—they already have their QB commit this time—but I’d hardly be surprised if someone did.

I don’t know if Easton has quite the polish that Brock does (and I mean “I don’t know”, not “he doesn’t”) but he’s got the same tools—and is five (or six) inches taller and twenty pounds heavier.

Bouman has that polish.

B. I will quite cheerfully give Brock every minute of experience he can get this year. He may not be the Second Coming every game, he may even have a bad game here or there—but better to get it out of the way now. Experience is experience.

C. Dean and Bouman. Seriously. Watch their film. Whenever Brock Purdy completes his eligibility, we’ve got nothing to worry about.

It’s weird. It’s almost like Matt Campbell has a plan in place, or something.

I was really impressed by Purdy making the pump fakes to force defenders to commit, both on runs and passes, and also by that 2pt conversion. The fact that he rolled out and was pressured, and found an open RB in the endzone through traffic while a defender was holding on to him. Those are tremendous displays of calm and football IQ from a true freshman.

He also made some really accurate throws into tight coverage. Dangerous at times, maybe. But damn good passes.

Remember, though. WV will have all week to see what Purdy brings to the table, and practice against it.

This will be a huge test for him AND the OL.

He got hurt before OSU and basically tried to go and got hurt again that game. And all indications are that Park not being around the team was the difference maker.

I got the feeling in Noland's tweet from the CF article that Kempt is basically coaching which I'm sure he's really good at.

He's a legend in his own right and it's deserved, but if he starts this weekend in what's a real important game CMC deserves some tough questions.

Why did we win the games when Kempt played? That is the question. Just looking at whether the team won or not isn’t an accurate analysis of a quarterback. Sure it is what is commonly done but that doesn’t mean it is how you should evaluate a quarterback. Kempt played amazingly well against OU last year but other than that we won games because of defense, Montgomery, and our receivers making plays.

I haven’t been impressed with the offense under Noland this year but last year it was much more dynamic when he came in and teams had to respect our passing game for more than short dump offs. Saturday our offense was incredibly dynamic. With Kempt it is just decent when given protection. I’m not sure how much is play calling and how much is the QB but our offense has to look like Saturday if we want to continue to improve in the Big 12.
