I'm not a fan of January. It's cold, there's limited sunlight, I'm regretting eating too much over the holidays, there's a lull in being able to watch my daughter play soccer, I rarely take any time off from work since I don't want to blow through vacation days early in the year, and there aren't any great driving destinations for a weekend getaway that I haven't done to death by now.

College basketball has saved January a bit for me this year, but last year January was all kinds of suck.

January is my least favorite, colder and darker. 65 in Nashville right now, I consider Valentines Day as the unofficial start of spring in TN.

I don't mind January. I'm into snow sports and there was enough snow for me to ski or fat tire bike the bulk of the month.

My happiness is heavily tied to the ability to do the things I like to do outside. Full winter allows for a lot of that. This half assed too much snow for non-winter activities and not enough for winter activities is tough.

For January the snow etc. is still fresh and you start to notice the days getting longer so don't mind it.

By February, snow melts, then turns into ice and it's harder to even walk around, and even though the days are longer, if it's cloudy, it's just cloudier...longer, haha.

March has its moments too but day light savings and warmer night temps help a lot.

All of this said I'm glad to live in 4 seasons territory to appreciate the changes.

January is my 12th-favorite month, so, no.

Weather-wise, January and February are similar, but February has small advantages (1) Fewer days! (2) Daylight hours begin to increase noticeably between end of Jan to first of March (3) Even if the weather is more brutal than Dec or Jan, you know spring is just around the corner ... (4) March Madness is only a few weeks away (Valentine's Day is sort of the turning point for my outlook.)

(I rank February 10th, just in front of November, for reasons mentioned earlier -- it's on the "front end" of winter).

The other issue with January is that if you live in an area where people put out a lot of Christmas lights, those all get turned off so it seems even darker.
I still prefer January over February, but I always hate that.

It's the absolute worst. Get some teaser good weather that never stays that causes a thaw out that creates an absolute mess. The amount of mud tracked in by my dogs and my kids is enough to make me crazy.

January is the worst month in Iowa:

- Mid winter
- Packed gyms
- “dry January” or other difficult resolutions
- 2 months from March Madness
- CFB ends
- Months away from golf season

I'm going to have to say january although february is close

if we're talking from a pure sports perspective.

late april/may/june/july all blow. I'm not into any sports that go on during that time. good thing there is other things to do outside during those months.

Yea, February in Iowa is the worst because it's a tease. We start having days in the 40's/50's that get one excited for spring, then BAM! Maybe a week of temps back in the teens & 20's. Last week was a great example, days in the teens, 20's 30's, 40's & 50's.

I always feel that the Big12 Tournament is the start of spring.

December.

It has the least amount of average daylight, and every single day's sunset is before 5pm. I think this is soul-crushing if you work a "normal" job.

Sure, there is Christmas and New Years Eve, and it's good to see family and friends around then. However, the culture of consumption around the holidays has completely gotten out of hand. I don't think many adults being honest with themselves could say otherwise.
More families are putting less of an emphasis on the gift giving, and, thankfully, mine is too. Still, there is some shopping for young ones which usually, if broken down, turns into a big circular transaction.

Also, I would fear being poverty stricken and raising young kids. You're expected to make the day magical. You've got usually multiple events with different sides of the family to travel to. No wonder surveys show that most people would prefer to not do any gift exchanges and about 1/3 would rather skip them altogether.

And then all the noise, noise, noise, noise!

I've always hated February the most, due to many of the same reasons:
  • Seems it's the coldest month with the most snow.
  • Football ended and before March Madness and start of MLB is around the corner.
  • Other cold months have better holidays (opposed to Valentine's Day): Halloweeen/Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's/St Patrick's Day/Spring Break/Easter
