That would have actually made it less TV for everybody else if they were taking spots on the other networks instead of being on NBC back in the day. Notre Dame was going to be on TV regardless of station. At least, on NBC, it wasn't at the expense of other teams or other games, as it was ND or nothing. Meanwhile, ABC, CBS, etc. it would have been ND OR Oklahoma, ND OR Alabama. ND OR Michigan, etc. Not trying to change your mind about not liking ND! lol. Just saying, that it cleared up a more limited TV space for other teams on the other channels. As far as having a recruiting advantage, they have always had that.
Pretzel reasoning. Are you seriously saying if NBC hadn't had an exclusive deal with Notre Dame they would have not pursued any other deal to carry college games?

Bartender, I'll have what the gentleman on the floor is having.

We are on the Notre Dame campus at least a couple of times a year for various reasons. It's a top 10 if not top 5 campus in the country.

I agree ND has a pretty campus, but top 5 no. Maybe top 10, maybe.
One of my favorites is Cornell.

Maybe? Maybe not? As it is, they do Notre Dame Home Games ONLY. No double headers. When ND is on the road, no games, etc. So, while you do ask a good question, I think it was ND or nothing for NBC. As it is, pre-ND on NBC, ND took more slots from other schools on ABC and CBS than they have since. It just doesn't bother me at all. It's MORE football on TV.

Could be but I doubt they go for decades without getting into the college football game if they don't have a contract with ND. And more opportunities getting spread around would have been a good thing during those lean years.

I guess we'll just have to disagree.

The town (South Bend) could be perceived as run down but you are the first person I’ve heard say the campus looks run down. I’m an ISU alum (x2) but work at ND so I’m confident stating ND has a great looking campus as does ISU. ISU does have a better ‘college town’ feel.

I've never understood why so many Catholics are Fighting Irish fans. I mean, I get the Catholic connection. But it's not like those guys are Creighton fans or Villanova fans or . . .

It's probably mainly because I grew up in the late 80's/early 90's. That team had been really good, Crucifixes aside.
I think a lot of that strain of fandom is passed down through families and goes back generations. At the time Notre Dame first became a national power, Catholics were still somewhat “other” in American culture.

I don't like Irish people....not just ND fans, but the actual humans from that backward island. They are ginger and always pinching me and stuff. I think they are mean and unempathetic too....so full of uninclusiveness. Maybe we can put a dome over the island and then rocket them off to some colony on Mars or something.

Yes, NOW it doesn't matter. But it gave them a huge recruiting advantage back when there were only 3-4 networks and thus very few hours available for College FB. That's when I developed my dislike.

NBC didn't really ever play college football other than bowl games before that. Iowa State's lack of television exposure in the late 80's and early 90's had nothing to do with Notre Dame.

I never said it did. I said I came to dislike them because they got unlimited exposure on one of the three/four major networks whether their performance on the field warranted that level of media coverage or not.

I understand they have a huge following and that is why NBC did what the did. That doesn't mean I liked it. What I resented was instead of seeing a game that mattered like Oklahoma or Nebraska or Texas or Alabama or USC or UW or Ohio State or some other team vying for national championship I was presented with unranked Notre Dame versus unranked and POS Navy, for example.

And it did give them an unfair recruiting advantage by having all their games on television when most teams got 1-3 games a year.

Did you live in Eastern Iowa or something? Not have ESPN? Notre Dame always had a recruiting advantage before NBC. Notre Dame was always on TV before NBC. CBS, ABC, ESPN. Didn't matter. And those were the only channels that played national games. The NBC deal basically took all of Notre Dame's home games off of those three networks. Ever notice how all of their road games are still nationally televised?

Who are the four current Big 12 teams who have never played Notre Dame? Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Of that group, only Oklahoma State surprises me. The other three were never consistently relevant. Now, however, it would be fun to see the Irish square off with Iowa State and Matt Campbell — one of the hottest coaching names in the college game.

Additionally, it’s a little sad that Bill Snyder never got a chance to face the Fighting Irish.

Well you got your wish
