Unfortunately, you can't tax stupid. It's unconstitutional.I-80 definitely needs to be widened around Iowa City. But I would pay for it with a Hawkeye Tax.
I lived in Chicago for several years and when coming back to eastern Iowa to visit family during that time would take the I-88 toll. I don't know what they did with those dollars but I don't think much maintenance of the roads was involved. I-88 was always in pretty bad shape.
You obviously haven't driven it lately as much of it has been resurfaced in the last 2 years.
Once you get west of 35 on highway 20 you see about 1 car every 5 miles. I'd rather have seen them add additional lanes to highways/interstates that actual see some volume. Expansion was not needed and this was more political than anything.

Maybe they would start using highway 20 in western Iowa, which is a complete waste of money.
How about three other projects that need updating instead:
1) Highway 17 between Wesley and Eagle Grove
2) Highway 18 between Clear Lake to Spencer
3) Blow up Mason City...has to be the worst city to drive through in Iowa besides Sac City
It's taken over 40 yrs and 20 as a four lane still isn't finished. If the DOT would finish it, it would get used. Anything that promotes growth to the rest of Iowa quickly gets shot down by the QC to DM corridor. The DOT did a whole redo of the loop around DM, in less time than was spent trying to finish 20.

Basically the proposal is to turn I-80 into a toll road charging cars at $.08/mile and trucks at $.24/mile. This would finance widening I-80 across the state (probably 6 lanes) and other improvements.
I used to think this was a terrible idea, but then I realized it basically costs $5 to drive across Ohio on I-80 and, other than cops looking to pull out-of-state drivers over, particularly Michiganders, it’s an awesome drive.
Agree. Highway 17 between 18 and Eagle Grove is in very poor condition from all the grain semi's hauling. Now add the traffic for the new hog plant.17 between 20 to 18 is going to need a complete redo with the increase in traffic it's going to get with all the semi traffic it's going to get with the new hog plant being built outside of Eagle Grove. It's already a pretty busy road and going to get way busier with the increase for the plant, feed trucks, etc..
I've always thought that the worst part for congestion is QC to IC. IC to DM usually isn't that bad.
