Iowa to never punt again...

My buddy and I were talking about setting up punt returns the other day.

We asked ourselves, why bother? So many teams, ISU it seems especially, call so many fair catches, that we think you'd be better off going for a block most of the time, as opposed to setting up a return. It seems less and less that teams get a chance to have a decent return.

Of course I have no data to back this up at all, just observation.

Yeah, right. If you have a fair catch every time policy your opponents will kick more and more line drives to maximize the distance since with a fair catch hang time is not an issue. Gotta punt from your own 10? No problem, line drive punt to your opponent's 25. You just flipped the field.

He said he wasn't going to call for a return, he did not say that he would instruct his return men to call for a fair catch.

Either way i don't believe him.

Before reading the article I assumed it was by allowing the opposition to score on every drive.

Y! SPORTS

We pretty much did that the year Blythe was back returning punts. It wasn't the fake it was actually the catch that killed us.

I will never forget that Colorado game!

Iowa had 300 yards of punt returns against directional MI. didn't they? Hard to give up on that kind of success :skeptical:
